External LaCie HDD with a Mac

I have a 500GB external HDD that I was trying to connect to my friends mac laptop last night. I am still really new to OS X, so don't know all the terms for navigation, so forgive me if I'm not explaining this correct. I did see an icon pop up in the window I had open that said LaCie when I plugged it into the USB port (sort of the equivalent of the drive initializing in Windows and doing a double beep). But when I double-clicked it, it wouldn't open. Any suggestions? What am I not understanding?

Thanks in advance,
Black

Yeah, I thought I was in there. That is where the LaCie icon popped up. It shows up on the left-hand side of the window with all the network icons and stuff. I'll try again on Monday when he brings it over.
