360 20gb HDD, Is it worth it??

hey guys,
i was just about to finally go out and get a 360 that has a deal where you get halo 3 and GTA4{pretty much only reason i waited so long to get one....lol} any way i noticed that the pack i want doesn't come with the 20gb HDD only a 256 mem card.

Is it worth getting one with the HDD?? even though i probs wont play Live! Is a 256 mem card big enough for my saves (not really interested in putting music and all that crap on my 360! thats what my original xbox is for!! lol)

thanks,

UPDATE: Hey just read the post by the stig "usb cable....driver needed". it got me thinking, could i somehow turn my unused 1gb usb stick as a mem card for my 360??(soon to be lol)

There's no way to turn a USB stick into a Memory Card for the 360. You can buy a Western Digital BEVS series HDD and use a program called hddhacker to create a 360 compatible HDD. You need to get the hddss.bin from another 20GB 360 HDD and use hddhacker to transfer it to the 360 HDD. Those hddss.bin files are unique for each 360 HDD, so good luck on finding one. You might have some luck with Google.

Here's a guide: TheSpecialist's HDDHackr v0.91 - Adds Support for WD BEVS-RST Drives - Scenyx Entertainment Community

Outside of that, well the 360 HDD is probably worthwhile. It will allow you to have backwards compatibility with the Xbox 1 (for games on the backwards compatibility list), access downloadable content on Xbox Live, rip CD's to your Xbox HD and play custom soundtracks in game, and reduce load times for games that make use of writing to the HDD. There are only a handful of games that require a HDD at present. The HDD's are a rip off, no bones about it, but they are less of a rip off then the Memory Cards. If you are getting a deal in the bundle, then Halo 3 and GTA are worthwile. Halo is pretty fun multiplayer and GTA IV is classic if you like the series.

Thanks mate, as i said i probs wont do live for the time being, mostly because my parent (yes i do still live at home......unfortunately) would kill me for using all their download limit!! lol.
how big are the saves for Halo 3 and GTA IV coz i will want to rip music to the mem stick if possible, but it will only be a max of like 15 songs!! is it even possible to rip music to a 360 mem stick??

Nope ripping songs is only possible with a HDD. You can also network a Windows PC to stream music to the 360.

What download limit do you mean? Is your 360 flashed with either the Xtreme or iXtreme firmware for playing backups?

i don't know if its the same in America but in Australia all the internet providers give you a set amount of gb's you can download!! it's a bit of a jib! I've only got 12gb a month!! thats for $60AU a month!! its such a rip off!!
so how much will playing halo 3 and GTA IV online download?
Sorry mate i haven't got my 360 yet, should do by next weekend!

I'm not sure how much playing online will affect your downloads. Is it a 12GB cap for all traffic or just downloads? 12GB's worth of data probably will be reached very fast if it's just dealing with data transfers, i.e. pages caching while browsing the web. I suggest contacting your ISP and inquiring what will and will not count towards your cap.

its 12GB cap for all traffic. and if we go over the 12gb the internet is slowed to just a little faster than dial up speed.

Thanks for all your help LS!!

Wow, that's a kick in the you know where. Even here it's like 40GB's for ISP's that have caps, which isn't very good either. Remind me not to move to OZ.

Well then I guess all you can really do is try going on Live and see how it affects your cap. If there's some way to check your cap for the month, try checking it out after a brief session on Live. If it fills up real fast, then Live is probably not worth the money. $50USD a year isn't much, but no sense in paying for something you can't use without maxing out your ISP cap.
