Sony Reveals 160 GB PlayStation 3 and New Peripheral

Sony Computer Entertainment America announces that the PlayStation 3 gaming console is getting a new bundle, aimed at the North American market. The bundle is released because of the upcoming launch of a limited edition of Uncharted: Drake\'s Fortune.\r\n\r\nThe bundle is set to retail for close to 500 dollars, specifically 499.99 dollars, and the package will include a 160 GB PlayStation 3 system, a copy of Uncharted: Drake\'s Fortune, which was created by Naughty Dog, a PlayStation Network voucher which will get you downloadable game Pain from Idol Minds and a DualShock 3 wireless controller.\r\n\r\nJack Tretton, who is the president and the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, explained the increased hard drive of the bundled console by saying that \"As PlayStation Network continues to evolve with our recently-launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity\".\r\n\r\nIt was widely anticipated that Sony would create a console variant with a bigger hard drive but some analysts also expected to see an across the board price cut for the console. Sony seems to believe that storage capacity is more important to potential buyers than price and sales of the new bundle will prove whether they are right or not.\r\n\r\nSony also says that a Wireless Keypad will be launched. The new peripheral will be attached to the Sixaxis and to the DualShock 3 and will make its first appearance in North America in November.\r\n\r\nThe new Wireless Keypad will be used to access the text chat communication service which is implemented in PlayStation 3. A Communication Button and a Message Box Button are included so that users can jump to the XMB while playing a game. It seems that the new peripheral can also be used with some smartphones and with other portable devices.\r\n\r\nSony says that LittleBigPlanet and PlayStation Home will offer full support for the new Wireless Keypad. Prices have not been revealed for the moment.

Lame... lame... lame. A 5400RPM 320GB 2.5'' SATA HDD costs about $108 on newegg. I don't need a bigger hard disk in the PS3, I can install it myself. I also hate bundles, I don't want Drake's Fortune or MGS4, just cut the console to $300, churn out some more exclusives, and the PS3 will be fine.

Yeah I have a 160gb HDD in mine at the moment.. but might upgrade it to a 320GB if I decide to get a PlayTV add-on (which is very possible)
Play.com (UK) : Play TV + PlayStation 3 TV Tuner : PlayStation3 - Free Delivery

When I upgraded to the 160GB HDD it took around 50 mins in total, but most of that time was taken with trying to undo the screws in the HDD cage for the PS3 because they are done up too tightly and didn't want to strip the threads or break the screws etc.

But on the other hand if we got offered a 160GB HDD PS3 and a game for the equivalent (269.55 pounds approx) we would snap it up for sure.... at the moment there's a 80gb model being/been released and is selling at 300 pounds ($556.48) with no games, but comes with a dualshock controller.

The TV Tuner deal looks pretty sweet. Is that service supported by Sony or 3rd Party? I thought about buying a PS3 a couple times recently, but all Wal-Mart had was the MGS4 bundle. Nothing against the MGS series, but it just doesn't appeal to me. I don't like being forced to purchase games with a console.

It's not a service as such... Freeview is the free digital TV broadcast that we have in the UK (and some parts of europe too I think??) and with this gizmo it makes it possible to plan your recordings etc on the PS3.. you should also be able to still record whilst playing games too, although I'm not sure if it works that way right from release date. With this it's also possible to watch one tv program whilst recording another on another channel or playing back a tv show whilst recording.... For me this will be a must have product as it'll simplify a lot of things I do and so can just upgrade the HDD when it needs it too.. if I bought a stand-alone HDD TV recorder it'd cost about 140 pounds or more for a decent model with a big HDD in it. I think they are planning on producing one for the US market too, but not sure on the timescale for it though.

With the standards of the US. Digital TV isn't a standard yet, until Feb 09. So til then, we can expect to see it.

Oh boy, another way for Sony to scam your money. Almost every single system that succeeds an older system that uses a form of CD/DVD media has used backwards compatibility. Sony makes you spend $400 or so on an 80gb model, the only one which offers backwards compatibility for the PS2.
