In reporting their annual financial results, Nintendo gave the biggest hint yet that the Nintendo Wii will debut for less than perhaps $200 (perhaps a psychological $199) if not definately $249.99 , by stating that the Wii "will not exceed 25,000 yen" ($222). The company has also announced that they are aiming for 6 million sales by March of next year!
quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Yoshihiro Mori told a press conference earlier today that the company had fixed this as a target. What it means for a U.S price is not clear, although $250 seems like a fair bet, with $199 an outside possibility. The company said it expects sales of 6 million units of the Wii console and 17 million units of its software by March 2007. The hardware figure is in line with Sony's targets for PlayStation 3. Nintendo today reported a 12.5 pct rise in its year to March 2006 net profit, mostly down to gains generated by strong overseas sales of DS and a weak yen. The company said Wii introduction costs and the appreciation of the Yen would likely mean a 34% decrease in profits for the year ahead. Nintendo posted net profit of 98.4 bln yen in the year to March 2006 ($873 million) up from profit of 87.4 bln yen in the previous year. Revenue though fell 1.2 pct to 509.2 bln yen ($4.5 billion). Operating profit fell 1% due to a decline in the GBA and Gamecube platforms. DS sold 11.5 million units in the last year, twice as many as in the previous year. "I think the share price fall is really a case of expectations being high and investors selling after having seen what they came to see," said Meiji Dresdner Asset Management's Tatsuo Nishimura. Sony's PS3 costs nearly 60,000 yen ($530) so if Nintendo can set a competitive price it will be able to win over a lot of customers, especially among DS users." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- News Source: Next-Gen.biz

Another thing other than the lack of 'hype' that will probably make this a wantable system.

$200 to $250 is a great price for the Wii putting back as the family console which is what Nintendo are good at

To be honest, the ps3 and 360 are more in the way broken PC's than consoles. (broken in the way that they can't be upgraded).....in my view the GC and now the Wii are the only true consoles left.

They can be very good competition. They were on top once, so they know what it takes to be on top. I really think this console will be for hard core gamers, a great second buyer, and for others, family type players, a great main console. I can't wait to see the lineup of games and accessories that they will have for it.

Yeah my opinion of Nintendo and MS is improving all the time. I can't say the same for Sony. I've been a Sony guy for awhile, but the way they're handling the PS3 is disgraceful. Screwing the UK by only allowing the 60GB HD model to be sold there, making the games region free but not the movies, doing nothing to quell the rampant rumors about not actually owning the games (saw Sadalius' thread, that's good), and the price is too high. $499 is too high for a 20GB HD. You can get an IDE 320GB HD for $120, I wonder how much of that cost is their POS HD?
