With a number of games journalists getting their hands on final builds of Wii software and hardware it was no surprise to hear their early impressions of games and the ins and outs of the Wii interface. But what may come as a big surprise is that, just like Nintendo’s competition, the Wii will allow custom soundtracks on some titles. While Excite Truck — no word on New Zealand release date yet — allows you to choose mp3s from any SD Card plugged into your system, there is no word on other titles supporting this.

No word on whether or not Nintendo will eventually allow you to stream mp3s from your home computer via the inbuilt WIFI networking, but this is definitely a sign of good things to come. For those still unsure about how this will work, the following is taken straight from the manual of Excite Truck:

Excite Truck allows you to listen to your personal MP3 music files during the game. By inserting an SD Card into your Wii console, you can choose the music you want to hear.

How to Select Music Tracks
1. Insert your SD Card into the Wii console.

2. Begin or continue a game and enter any race. Before the race begins, press + on the Wii Remote to access the Sound Options screen.

3. Select the “SD Card” option.

4. Any MP3 files available on your SD Card will be displayed (100 songs maximum). To choose a specific song for the race you are about to enter, highlight that song. You can also choose to randomize all songs shown for that course. Highlighting “Default” will play the standard in-game music.

5. Press 1 to return to the Sound Options menu, then 1 again to return to the pre-race screen. You can also use the “Sound” command at any point during the race to change the current song.

Thanks go out to Mark Bozon from IGN for tearing into a final build before launch.

That's kinda cool...and so easy and simple. So for the people that have mp3 players or palm/ppc that have their tunes stored on SD cards, they should be able to just pop it in and there they go?

The Wii does indeed have an SD card slot. Exactly what all you will be able to use this for is not real clear at this point, but mp3's and picture files are supported with SD cards.
