Nintendo Cracking Down on BitTorrents?

A Wii fan blog is running a story which indicates that Nintendo are cracking down on torrents. The news comes after one bit torrent user was sent a warning letter by the ESA after downloading 'Legend of Zelda'. The user claims he did not download this specific file however...

Quote:
Another newsbit from our pal JoeyBuckets, this time he happens to be directly involved. After downloading what he swears was an old Zelda cartoon from BitTorrent, his ISP was contacted by the ESA with the following letter. In short, be careful what you download and stop downloading illegal games unless you want to lose your internet service and possibly deal with other legal issues. Now that the Virtual Console is out, Nintendo can and will take a hard stance against even older ROM’s if they wish. We highly suggest just getting the Wii system and playing your favorite games legitimately and supporting those that put in the work to bring them to us. We at The Wii Experience do not condone downloading illegal software and the following letter is an example of what your ISP may receive if you do such activities.

That's crap, emulation of obsolete systems is supposed to be legal now. Just goes to show when they want to play the copyright card, the law doesn't mean much on the part of the consumer.

I would think that they would care about the Wii torrents that have been popping up around the bit torrent community, not old N-64 games

Exactly, companies just don't know how to embrace technology, this just further exemplifies that.

I'm pretty sure that since nintendo are still using the Zelda franchise, that the copyright is still in effect....so although the original platform that the "said game" would have been on is obsolete..the copyright is not.

That's why it's hard to find games like pacman and frogger....atari/activision will never let those copyrights die.
