should i add memory or not?

In my computer i have 2x 512mb. On my back up PC which i use less than 10times a year, has 2x 256mb. Should i take that memory out and put it in my Main PC that has 2x 512mb????? Is it possible to mix 512mb memory with 256???? Also would i notice any speed improvement???? If i do choose to put a new memory, do i need to update like driver, setting or any system update???????

Taking two 512MB sticks and joining them with two 256MB sticks is not a good idea.

Without getting into a drawn out explanation, it is better to have RAM (when using multiple sticks) that mirror one another in size (preferrably brand). You may end up with a compatibility issue and not be able to use those sticks together, in addition to having an optimized system.

If you want to upgrade RAM in your main PC, or any PC..I'd say go with identical makers and sizes for each slot. Maybe two, 1 GB RAM sticks for your main PC and transfer the old 512's to you backup system removing the 256s completely.

http://www.crucial.com has a pretty good selection of RAM at a decent price. It's not as high end as OCZ, Corsair, or Mushkin, it's good RAM for pretty cheap, they even have a Memory Scanner which will tell you how much RAM you can hold at what speed, in how many banks. Unless most of your PC is upgradeable, you probably wouldn't notice a huge boost from going over a 1GB, except maybe for newer games, extreme multi-tasking, and video encoding.

Wassup AR. For your situation, it would probably just be best to remove the stick of RAM sitting at 256MBs. Its best for a system if the speed, parity, and type match within each system. For optimum performance, it really is best...

I made a small guide about RAM if anyone is interested. It may answer other questions you might have.

Parity is just ECC and Non-ECC right? Isn't ECC just for servers or something?

Yeh, mostly on high-end servers. Only thing that sucks about them is when an error is found, it des nothing to fix it. Maybe 8MBs or so off to the side there to run the test, but that's it, it just runs the error check. If an error is found it will bypass the error on the next check and that's that.
