Hi everyone,

I have a major PC prob. The darn thing wont power on anymore. The only thing it does is that the light in the back flashes. It is just a light back there where all other pcs just power on this one just flashes. It was workin earlier at my dad's then i brought it over to my mom's and then went to work. When i came back it didnt work. SO if anyone can help i would appreciate it. Thanks

First, what kind of computer are we talking about? Custom or brand name? How old is it?

Second, have you verified the power source is working (wall outlet or power strip)?

Third, try unplugging the power cord to the computer for at least 5-7 minutes. Some power supplies can receive a spike and won't turn back on until the power has been disconnected for a set amount of time?

Fourth, is the room where the computer is located air conditioned or boiling hot?

Fifth, please explain more about the light flashing. Are you talking about the light near the ethernet cable, on the network card or?

It is a sony vaio model VGC-RB40 it is a couple years old. it was brand new when i bought it.

Yes i have varified that the power source works. I tried different outlets and different power cords aswell.

I left the power cord on the pc for a while and still doesnt work. I also left it unplugged for a while and tried turning it back on still doesnt power on.

The room is nice, room temperature i would say. There is another pc in the same room so i would say that the temperature is good.

The light is just a circle below where the power cord connects below the watts adjusment switch on the power unit. I opened the pc up and i also see a flashing light on the mother board. There is a series of cables that run from the motherboard to the power supply unit, there is where i see the flashing light. I tried unplugging the cables and pluggin them back in but still no prob.

I am thinking that it is the power supply unit but i am no computer genious.
Thanks for all your help :P

Do you have another power supply?

If you do than take the old one out and replace with the other one, just remember where all the wires were plugged to.

And one more thing is there any dust anywhere inside the case?

You mentioned you moved the PC recently? Check to make sure all boards are seated properly, as well as memory. Sometimes moving a PC can shake loose a board attached to the motherboard and can cause a computer to not turn on.

When you plug in the power to the power supply on the back, does the fan inside move at all? If not, take a pencil or something similar and try to move the fan (just to see if it stuck or something). Be careful of getting shocked or anything.

Darn, I was hoping for a simple solution for you.

Ok, if you know the issue is with the motherboard, you need to determine the type of mother board and size so it can be replaced (most likely an ATX), or... since you plan to replace the motherboard anyways and this will mean removing it, why not take it out now and then take the motherboard and power supply to your local computer store and have them determine which parts you need to buy in order to replace them. Here is a link to removing your motherboard.

Make sure you reply back here with the results of your motherboard switch and add any tips you may have. Also feel free to ask any related questions to the issue and I will see if I can help you any further here.

k well i took the motherboard off no prob. From the old motherboard i took off the RAM, modem, and processor, and the little coin thing. lol. Is there anything else i am forgetting? do you guys reccomend that i take in the motherboard to a pc store or that i get it off the internet. Is there a way to determine what motherboard to use without taking it to an expert? Thanks
