DVD burner changes.....

I currently have a NEC ND2100-AD DVD+RW DVD burner on my PC. I was recently reading that somehow via firmware you can change this burner to a 2500AD DVD-/+RW burner. I have read a few things about it and it seems fairily simplistic however I have some concerns about what kind of damage can be done to the burner OR PC.......any ideas on the subject?:stupids:

Its only a firmware upgrade, the worst that can go wrong, is you having a dead burner. No effects can occur to your PC. In some cases you can restore a dead drive, but only some.

Sounds like it would just be better to buy a new burner anyway. I was just trying to find a firmware upgrade for my burner since I am having so many problems with my PS2 backups.

Cross flashing burners is of varying degrees of difficulty. I had an old Sony DRU-810A. It was an OEM BenQ 1640. I read around, talked to some people, and the consensus was it probably wasn't worth the trouble, but I didn't listen lol. I read around on CD Freaks, and the crossflash process was simple, you just needed an app called Quckies BenQ flasher and the firmware. It was an easy process. If you are going to attempt it, look around CDFreaks forums for information on your burner. If you are comfortable with the process and aware of the risks, it can't hurt to try. The main thing to ask is how many features is it going to unlock?
