Ok, we have a pc (at work) that decided to up and quit on us. I thought it was just the power supply, so I swapped one out with no luck. Then, I figured something might be hanging it and I cleared the CMOS...still no luck. After that, I unplugged everything but the minimum requirements to see if it would power up and still get the same thing (powers on for 1/2 second and shuts down). I have also reseated everything on the mobo to see if that would help. My only other guess would be that the mobo is shot or there is a heatsink issue.
Anybody have anything else to suggest (besides chucking it)? Also, just for a little clarification, there hasn't been any hardware replacements/upgrades done to it in probably the last 2 years and it has been running for about 7 years. |

Could be alot of things. It being a old computer, makes it harder to determine what the problem is. Either CPU is fried, mobo could be dead, sensors are fried, capacitor has blown. So on...

Does it post? If so look up the 'beep' combo. If not....does it just not power up or does it do the rebooting loop? If that happens it could be bad memory even. If that's the case....try swapping the ram...or if there's two sticks, take one out and try...then try the other. This would rule that out.
Always try the easiest and cheapest ideas first.

He mentioned that he already tried swapping out the PSU with another one and that didn't help. I'm starting to lean towards a bad board too...

Since it's an old computer, grounding could be an issue. Remove the motherboard, place it on a cardboard box, reconnect the minimal devices and power on the system.
If a system isn't properly grounded, it happens in old PC's when moved (it sucks) it may or will fail to power on. But like others have said, there are so many possibilities. |
