PC error causing manual shut down

Just got a new comp-- HP Pavilion a6110n--but using my old monitor (hp pavilion vf17). Got a great deal on it. Every time I'm on for about an hour or so the screen gets a bunch of lines colored red white and yellow like 1-2mm apart and they just get brighter n stuff like that, but the whole comp is frozen..and i know its not a monitor problem because I switched cords and it still didn't work.

What I tried:
Uninstalling Driver, Reinstalling, and Updating (still get the error)
Running Diagnostics from PC Help Center (says everything is fine)

So..is there any way to fix it? I really hope it can be fixed cause i got a great deal on it.

Thanks

That's not necessarily true. Sometimes a series of lines and dots similar to what you described are a sign of the monitor dying. To completely rule out the monitor as an issue...try connecting it to another desktop or laptop for a substantial period of time. Then see if the issue still occurs.

Which drivers did you uninstall and reinstall? The one for the monitor or the one for the video card??

My Step dad has the EXACT same HP, and had that EXACT problem. We tried everything you said and got no results. So we eventually just reformatted, and it hasn't done it since. I'm assuming because you said it's a new computer, there's not much you will lose by reformatting, so that's what I suggest you do. It was about 4 months ago we reformatted it, and it's been working perfectly since =) Give it a shot.

I suppose you have done this but just in case. Have you checked into all of the power saver and hibernation settings in your control panel and in your graphics card (if it has them). Just to make sure that it is not some setting that is causing it to shut down after an hour.
