Opinions on CPU

Ok, i am thinking with my tax money this year i will do some PC upgrades. Have not totally decided what yet but i am thinking another 2GB of RAM, A new SATA HDD since i had one go out on me a few months ago, and possibly even a quad-core processor.

It seems that pretty much everyone who bought this one liked it, and a lot of people have bought it. the price is right so i just want some opinions on how good you think it is:

I am currently running a 2.13GHz Core2Duo so i think it would be a big step up, especially after i overclocked it.

That would be the same one I have right now. Over its good. Not OC friendly. Just pushing 200Mhz will cause it to be unstable .

I recommend getting the SLACR, unlike the SL9UM which was the first version release. The SLACR is tweaked since SL9UM. Overall.... I rather get a E6850 than a Quad. Just cause its a quad, doesn't mean its better. Better yet I would die for a X6850 .

Enough of my day dreaming
If you go for a quad, get the SLACR

Well they are both (SLACR or E6850) right about the same price. But if the E6850 is going to have better overclocking capabilities then i may just go with that. I did see some benchmark tests and from what it showed even the E6700 had better number then the Q6600.

I am just trying to decide if i really need to spend the $250 or not. I know i could use the HDD and memory. But i am up in the air on the processor since i do not do any PC gaming other then Tiger Woods 07. So first i have to justify to myself that i need the upgrade.

and the X6850 is just way out of my price range

personally, i'd go with the G0 stepping (slacr) 95W energy efficient version

even if you dont overclock, it just makes more sense

it uses 95W

the origonal uses 125

so at least it will create less heat..

For the records, on 3D Mark 05. The q6600 I have SL9UM gets a CPU score of 10,000. Thats OC'ed 15%. I havent done 06 yet.

You can compare both quads here
Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 - SL9UM

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 - SLACR

Thanks Kam. I am actually leaning more twoards the E8400 Wolfdale 45nm at the moment. I of course will flip flop around as always until i finally decide what i want to do and if i even decide to buy it.

Steimy, just my two cents worth... but if I was you I'd either get the quad core Q6600 as it's around the same price as the E8400. Or just make do with the dual core you have for a while longer, something always comes along after I've bought something new that's a much better deal... for instance I bought my E6750 dual core about 6 months ago, and within a month the Q6600 quad core dropped to almost the same price... man did I kick myself
It's still a damn good CPU, but would definitely be better sharing the workload across 4 cores instead of 2 IMO... obviously you would only notice this on high end applications anyway, but for what it's worth video encoding for instance is soooo much faster on 2 cores than single core, so can only imagine what 4 cores would be like

I'm gonna wait until later this year or early next year before I build another PC personally, hopefully by then the core2extreme will be much lower in price or even have a better option such as running the PS3 to it's full potential with linux or something

Yeah, i have thought about it and it may just be better to wait until the next tax return money comes in and build a new system. By then the really good parts now will be cheap. Plus i really need a new, bigger case. The thing i hate is starting from scratch and trying to do 3-4 months worth of research trying to get all your parts right

I quite like deciding which parts to get really... must be a sadist, LOL

Main things as I'm sure you know is to start with which CPU you want, then get a mobo to match that socket AND get your DDR2/DDR3 RAM slots, PCI-e or AGP slot(s) etc depending on your requirements too. Then pretty much it's a breeze from there just choosing stuff to suit your budget.... that's what I do anyway

My line of process is
Type of CPU
Type of Motherboard
Type of Video card
Type of RAM
Type of Harddrive
Type of Optical Drive
Any extra FAN, Lights or stuff
Then Power Supply based on the stuff I got

The case really dont matter, I just get anything thats flashy and will fit all of that.
