DVD Player/burner diode's

Hi, I'm after a diode for a laser that will glow red.
But I unfortunatly do not have a DVD Burner that is spare.
Although I do have a DVD Player spare.
I would like to know if a diode from a player glows red the same way a Burner does.
I'm not exactly after a cutting laser, just a powerful red laser.

Thanks

Edit- Just asked my friend... They do glow red just like a burner... although a burner produces about 200mW on average, but he said a player will only produce about 4-5mW.
Don't worry about answering this.

Also this is for you other people who want a laser.!
