You can clone the harddrive, but you will need another harddrive. Otherwise you will have to transfer the files only.

Well, you would need to copy the files you want to save, to another destination, such as a USB thumb drive, external harddrive, other another harddrive. Cause, if you do clone the harddrive, and reinstall it. The only way to get the files is to restore that clone image, making the reinstall completely pointless, cause it will be over written.

I backed up my files, but I didn't format my hard drive I just did a full installation on XP again, was that wrong? because it said something like i would have to install on the existing partition, which would result in me having a multi-system computer.

Okay, this what I suggest.

1. Backup your files to another harddrive
2. Pop in windows XP cd
3. Go through the installation, and it will ask about the partition. Select all the partitions "Mainly C:", and press D, then L, to delete the partition.
4. There will be one option left, select it and press enter
5. Continue on and install Windows XP as normal
6. Once done, you will have a freshly installed XP, and just copy your files back over.
