To play back up you need either a modchip or Swap Magic. To make backup, you just need DVD Decryptor.

That wont work. You need to buy the original Swap Magic for it to work.

*Edit: Merged

Nope, Either buy Swap Magic or Buy a modchip. Those are the only way to play back up on a PS2.

As stated Swap Magic must be a bought copy, and with it you will also need one other mod. For the fat models you can use a slidecard which is free but a royal pain. Or buy a Swap Magic and fliptop combo.
With the slimline you need Swap Magic and a set of magic keys for your version.

Getting a GOOD mod chip installed is the best option but requires you to send your PS2 off and have it installed, unless of course you are really good with a soldering iron and wiring directions. The cheapest good chip i know is the
Duo 3 chip. The top 3 chips are the Crystal Chip V2.0, Matrix Infinity, or DMS4 Pro SE

heremia, my advice would be to go for the chip. I used Swapmagic for a while, but only to test if my backup games worked. I was too afraid of damaging the laser to really want to play it. I went through Teammodders.com. They do an excellent job. They've done 2 of my consoles and I have nothing but good things to say about them.

If you really feel like doing a little extra research, the best way to go would be buying a premodded fat ps2 from them so that you can play the PS2 games off a hard drive. More of an upfront cost, but a good investment to extend the life of your console.
