Without either one, you can not play the game then. You need Swap magic or a modchip.

All things being equal, a modchip is a much better solution. You don't have to resize dual layer (DVD-9) games to single layer (DVD-5), get support for PSX games, doesn't require a casemod, and allows you to play backup games just like originals, simply insert and play. The good modchips for the PS2 are the Matrix Infinity Green Dot, Crystal Chip 2.0, and DMS 4 Pro SE.
The only advantage Swap Magic has over a modchip is cost. Factor in time wasted from resizing games and swapping discs before each boot, and the cost difference is arbitrary imo. A modchip+installation+shipping will run you about $100. Swap Magic with a case mod is $30. They will both allow you to run backups, but a modchip is really the way to go imo. TeamModders v2 :: The ultimate modding forums! does excellent work, they modded my PS2/Xbox 1/Xbox 360, all with fantastic results.

I have a question. I have the slim ps2 and i do not need that swap magic add on that opens the disc tray on top it already does that. I am wondering since i dont need that and i only need the cd, does it have to be an original copy in order for it to work?

You'd still need to get the magic keys (sensor blockers etc) for the cd/dvd to work, which is why LS said CASE MOD instead of FLIPTOP. Personally I would go with the modchip, it does get tedious swapping the discs over and plus with the modchip you get extra benefits... take it from someone that's used swap magic for the last 2 years or so - I only realised how tedious it was when I got an xbox and didn't have to swap discs etc anymore, now I don't even use my PS2 and the 100's of games I have for it, lol

Yeah you have to use an original copy of Swap Magic, a backup won't boot. The only way to boot a backup of Swap Magic is with a modchip or original copy.
