OK this is getting on my last nerve!. If anyone read my last thread I was haveing major issues with my modded PS2 reading discs. After trying everything under the sun I bought a new laser and installed it this weekend. Now heres the problem, it reads all ORIGINAL PS2 games and DVD movies but will not play my burnt games. Before everything went to crap a few months ago it was playing them just fine (well for a few days or so before the laser gave out). I have tried to load normally and I have tried to load them throughthe Toxic page and all I get is a black screen with "Disc read error" on it. When I load into the PS2 desktop it shows the disc is there but when I try to load it I get the same error message. Any ideas? :flex:

You probably have to adjust the laser, most likely increasing the voltage.

OK this is a new laser (well used and tested) that I bought because NOTHING I tried before worked. As I say I just installed it and it worked great running my PS2 originals but won't play my back ups. Toxic SEEMS to be working alright as it loads and all the HDD games load just fine. SO what do you think? Should I take it apart again and go through all the steps (adjusting the angles and the pots)? I am really getting tired of takeing my console apart, although I am getting good at it, LOL.

You guys seem to be experts on this thing. I also had my share of Disc read errors, recently I found a great tutorial that help a newbie like me solve this thing easily. It has step by step information and photos.
Here is the link for the DRE Solution Hope it will help more newbies solve this problem |

Hard to say exactly, but my first thoughts are perhaps a loose solder point on the chip. It's hard to account for it loading originals, games off the HD, but not backups off disc. What kind of discs are you using? One possibility is your old laser liked a certain kind of media, and your new laser doesn't like that same kind. Generally Verbatim's, Taiyo Yuden's, and Riteks are best to use for PS2 backups. What's the Media ID of the discs you are using? Put em through DVDIdentifier and post back.

Well last night I went through my discs and here is my discovery, all that are burned on the Fujifilm (which I thought was a good disc, not great but good) DID NOT WORK! All those I put on the Sony disc's worked great. Dumb question, does adjusting the pots help it to read other discs better? All the Fuji disc's worked great before I changed lasers.

Well that seems to be the problem. No don't fiddle with the pots, just copy any games you wanna play onto the Sony media and you should be fine. Most likely a perfectly good disc image can be created from the non-booting Fuji's. So don't fiddle unecessarily with the laser.

I am ordering in some Taiyo Yudens this week, hopefully they will work well. I am also getting a new DVD burner that will burn on DVD-R media as mine only burns on DVD+R, I am not sure if this make any differance but I do know that the DVD-R discs are about 8 to 10 dollars per hundred cheaper.

Yeah that's not a bad idea. There's no real better format imo. Gurus argue +R's are better quality because of technical differences in the manufacturing process. Taiyo Yuden's should work great in either format. Besides which, the burner will pay for itself after couple orders of -R's. I personally use +R's for games, -R's for everything else. Both will work well with minimal coaster rates on good media.
