The time it takes to load the game is based on how bad/good the PS2 laser is. If the laser is bad, or dying it takes a long time to load, or just load to the RSOD. Might want to tweak the laser a bit.

Yeah best to clean and adjust the laser, that's not normal. It can also depend simply on the game, some games just take longer to load than others, most of it is based on the game's software setup more than anything. In your situation however, try cleaning the laser, and tweaking it a bit. Here's a couple guides to get you started.

Definitely, what kind of media are you using, download DVD Identifier and post the results, or simply look in DVD Decrypter/ImgBurn for the media/manufacturer ID.

As above, if backed up correctly on quality media it should load no different, as far as speed, then the original disc did.
Common factors like the laser strength, quality of media and burning speed can effect this.

Scroll down in the righthand portion of the program until it says disc/manufacturer ID.

Yeah that could be the problem. I know my PS2 never liked the Sony Media ID, never had problems with Verbatim's or Taiyo Yuden's. It's a good idea to pick up some Taiyo Yuden's, Verbatim's or Riteks, those three brands will usually work on most setups. You can 100 spindles of Verb's locally at chain stores, I know for a fact Sam's Club carries 100 packs of them in either format. If you want to order online, try:

DVD-R,DVD R Media,DVDR Blank Media,DVD R,DVD+R,Dual Layer,Double Layer,Printable DVD,DVD Case,Duplicator,USB Flash Memory,Ink Cartridges

Newegg.com - Buy Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
