If the first burnt disc works fine, you won't have a problem ripping it and then burning it again.

There is no real way to confirm if it is the disc that is bad, or it can be the laser of the console. If you are able to make a backup with no error, then there is no doubt that the console possibly have a bad laser.

It depends if the problem with the original backup is something with the iso itself, or a defect in the disc. You could use Nero CD/DVD Speed to scan the original backup for a disc quality and disc surface scan. If that comes up as a problem, then you could rerip the original backup and burn it at a higher speed. Sometimes PS2 games skipping and freezing can be a sign that the disc is burned too slow. Burning at 8x is the highest you'll typically want to go for DVD-5 console backups. It can also be a sign the laser or disc is damaged or dirty. The easiest way to test it out is rerip your original disc again, as opposed to try and get a working copy from a potentially crappy backup. Get Nero CD/DVD Speed here: http://cdspeed2000.com/files/NeroCDSpeed_4775.zip

OK ok guys, burning discs at higher speeds causes more wear and tear on the ps2 laser, and we should all know that the lasers are already crappy in our ps2s. Also when burnning them faster the ps2 just has a harder time reading them. Burn at 2x and you will save your ps2 lens, and not have to reburn discs, whats another 10-20 mins if your ps2 lasts another year.

That's not really true though... burn speed has little or nothing to do with wear and tear on the laser. It's much more affected by the quality of the dyes used on the different brands of DVD media. If a game is burned too slow, the laser can't read the game data as fast, which can cause lag. Sometimes burning faster can resolve the issue, especially in FMV-heavy games.
