Help Needed Before I Go Nuts!!!!

Ok I am haveing a serious internet problem with my CP at home and I am not exactly sure where to turn. This may not exactly be the correct place to put this request but.....here it goes:

When attempting to access the internet from home I get a message page that says something like: Unable to find page www.msn.com did you mean www.msn.com?. It has been happenning with all the pages I try to visit (ebay, xtreme-source so on and so forth) same message: Unable to find www.ebay.com did you mean www.ebay.com?. and so on and so forth. I have reset my internet to it's defaults and also reset my computer back to an earlier time when it actually worked. I had been using it yesterday in the morning and it worked fine then all of a sudden POW. Later in the evening I reset my modem and router and it seemed to work fine again but this morning it all went tits up again. Any suggestions or ideas that may help?

Acoording to my Windows Defender and McAfee virus scan there are no "harmful" files on my computer. Is there anything else I need to run to scan the system? Or do I have a totally differant problem?

And oh yeah, not to sound stupid but what is malware? Same as adware or spyware?

I would suggest using hijackthis, then posting the log here. Sounds like some nasty malware, and hijackthis is a powerful tool for all this.

is it possible to have a mac O.S on a comp with win XP ???

Get HJT from that link, set it up, then run the app. After that, post a copy of the log and one of the guys will give it a look over for you.

Also get spybot and adaware, and scan your system using those, just to see if they can detect anything. Spybot is awesome and often finds what other apps dont.

Im thinking your HOST file has been hijacked. You should use post your HJT (Hijackthis) log and maybe might be able to help to clean it.

Yeah, sounds like your browser got hijacked. Do you use FireFox or Internet Explorer? If you're using IE, you don't need much to get your browser/hosts file hijacked. SpyBot S&D is Free and will cover a lot of stuff if set right. So will JavaCool Spyware Blaster/Spyware Guard. Those apps are free. There's some really good pay apps that cover stuff as well including Webroot SpySweeper, Ewido Anti Mal-Ware, and CounterSpy. CounterSpy is basically a beefed up version of Defender. MS bought Sunbelt Software (makers of CS) and released Windows Defender, which isn't nearly as good as CounterSpy in my opinion.

Spyware Blaster Guide: Anime Sig Requests

Use FireFox. It doesn't have active X scripts built in, and is faster than IE. You can easily set it to block third party cookies, and have it block ads and scripts with plug ins like No Script.

Yeah I agree with LS, most like hijacked browser and to use a better browser with some added defenses..
I use FF with the noscript plugin, plus FF has a popup blocler as standard.. and I use spybot s&d to scan for stuff occassionally, I use counterspy as my resident spyware app to live scan.. and I use NOD32 anti-virus and a few other smaller apps to check for worms etc every now and then..
The main thing is to check your DL'ed files for viruses etc BEFORE you install or run them.. that's a big rule with me .. hope you get it all sorted out man.. personally with all the probs I've seen you have posted lately, i'd wipe my PC completely and start again.. it'll probably take less time than scanning etc and trying to work out all the glitches
