AVG question

Yesterday after AVG updated, it started seeing my little program that I use to make getting on xbins a little easier as a virus. Even though I know it does not have a virus in it and tell it to ignore it, I believe it is keeping me from using the program. The program is called xbins-tirc if someone wants to check it out. What happens now when I try to use it is AVG pops up the virus detected dialog box and I choose ignore. Windows then pops up a dialog box that says Windows could not access the program that I may not have the appropriate permissions to access the items.

I've been looking for a way to exclude this program in AVG, but have not been able to find one. In hopes that I am just overlooking something, does anyone have any ideas?

Nah, it's been a while since I used AVG.. but don't think that's possible.. could be wrong though.

Just a suggestion, but why not use NOD32 instead? - it also has a small footprint and is hardly noticeable unless you have something it detects might be a virus running or downloading etc.. it's the best AV software I've ever used and I've tried quite a lot in my time - so east to set-up exclusions and other properties.. has saved my bacon a few times in the past couple of weeks.. most noticeably when it detected a variation of mydoom3?? downloading and paused the download and notified me so I could quarantine/delete etc... was really thankful for having NOD32 that day, lol

as good as NOD32 is,it has some problems with conflicts with some popular apps as well. Either way,I haven't had any trouble with that xbins app when I used it awhile ago...so I dunno what's going on with yours.

Well, it done the same thing on my computer at home too. I was actually using the xbins app to check for the latest firmware for LS's 360 when AVG updated and thats when something canned xbins-tirc. But here on my work machine, I hadn't used it in some time, so I didn't know which app to blame for it. I may give nod32 a try and see if that clears things up. Is nod32 a freeware anti-virus or subscription or what?

Thanks guys!

PMed you sadalius

I have never had any conflicts with NOD32, but I may not use the same progs as some of you guys.. I don't use x-biins or torrents anyway.. and most of my progs on my comp are ripping/encoding apps and the like to be honest. Anyway, I hope NOD32 sorts you out sadalius.. I hate it when you have a prog you really like using and then one day you just can't use it anymore.. had that happen with sony cd/dvd gen.. think it might be my version of windows needing the runtime files or something.. anyway I couldn't be bothered to go through that again so I just used nero or gnies tool and some others instead.. there's usually a way around something or better/similar apps to use

I had this same thing happen with Trend Micro PC-Cillin Sadalius, it detected the xbins-tirc app as malware and nuked it on the spot. I knew it wasn't malware, I believe I even downloaded the one from the XS download section. I just delete it to be sure though. Never used Nod32, a lot of people like it though. Probably once my subscription to Trend runs out, I'll use BitDefender, Kapersky, or Nod32.

Bitdefender is too "needy" - wants to tell you about every little thing happening, gets really annoying after a while when you're trying to do something.. kaspersky was OK, but that had it's problems too... I've tried pretty much all the major AV software and the best ones I've used are AVG and NOD32.. and out of those 2 NOD32 wins!! - it checks for updates every hour (silently) so you're always protected against the newest threats and so many different settings you can apply if you want.. but generally I just have it checking my e-mails,internet and files running etc.. and doesn't slow down the PC at all

Trend is pretty good, the only real chink in the armor is some of the tests of in the wild stuff have been less than stellar. They never mentioned what settings they used though, the out of the box settings are a joke, the real time and manual scan settings can be tweaked for maximum protection, in fact malware has never even made it past the real time scanner. I've used it for a year and a half now, 8/10 or so overall. The only reason I won't renew my subscription in the future is I refuse to pay money anymore for AV.

Mcafee is excellent from a protection standpoint, but unless they changed something, it's devilishly hard to uninstall. I've only read about BitDefender and Kapersky, but they are highly rated almost everywhere. I've used a ton of AV's as well, not too much of late though, I've settled on Trend Micro PC-Cillin for awhile now. I'll have to try Nod32, it seems to be what most PC-saavy guys use.

Yeah mcaffee isn't that hard to uninstall personally.. but to actually run it it's utterly useless IMO.. very hard on the resources and is almost as needy as bitdefender... I just like an AV that lets you get on with what you want to do instead of popping up stuff all the time.. NOD32 lets you do that and still is very good for protection.. it won't stop everything obviously, but I haven't had ANY viruses since I started using it around 6 months or so ago.. and I use it coupled with counterspy to look for spyware etc.. they're the main "blockers" for my computer, then I have a few apps that I have in case of needing to remove viruses/malware/spyware etc if I get infected.. pretty much have a sweet setup right now and don't think I'll be changing anything anytime soon
