Matter of opinion.

Some people say Zone Alarm. It is solid protection, but has conflicts with a ton of programs and is widely targeted by trojans because so many people use the free version. No one I really consider to be a knowledgeable PC user uses Zone Alarm for those reasons. Below that to be honest, I don't think there's a ton of difference in firewalls. A router/modem firewall should always be the first line of defense against hackers, a software firewall is mainly useful for program permissions. So take your pick out of the XP firewall, Trend-Micro, Mcafee, Kapresky, Outpost, Black Ice, etc. To avoid conflicts, it's usually best to use the fire wall that goes along with your AV (i.e. Mcafee firewall and AV), or just use the XP firewall.

I myself use BlackIce PC protection. BlackIce, besides being a firewall also has something called "Application Protection". Any program not on a white list u are given a screen whether or not to allow it to continue. One downside is that the updates as far as I can see are manual. Any other question's I'd be happy to answer

Just comes to user preference really. I used to be all about software firewalls, and after some trial and error, testing against shields up, it doesn't make a huge difference imo. I got about the same test scores, until I just stealthed and and my router unpingable. Those features you mention in Black Ice are nice, but the same thing can be accomplished through msconfig. If you take good security precautions (AV, Anti-Spy apps running, Firefox with No Script plugin, Avoid IE, scan all downloads), you won't have random processess popping up anyway. And again, it's just my personal preference, I've never used Black Ice, it may in fact be a great firewall.

the best security is knowledge...you can have the best firewall made...but if you let something in yourself,it won't do jack.

NOTE: i just use winXP firewall myself...can be hard to configure, but it tested just as good as all the ones mentioned once configured.

I use Outpost....requires out to grant access to apps just like any good firewall will, but in the end, if the user doesnt know squat it doesnt really matter what you use. I know it is corny, but knowledge = power.
