If you can, use Spyware Doctor. That is a very very good program. Let's see, I used Spybot and Adaware 6 to scan, Adaware found like 3, Spybot found around 20. Ran Spyware Doctor, that thing found a little over 100 infections on my machine? 100+??? That's insanely good to me ehhe.

Depends on what it found too....I used a spyware program once and it got rid of all the cracked portions of my 'aquired' programs....so I had to redo just about everything. Also...I would test the anti virus scans first before you decide to delete anything.....just see what it is that the program thinks is a virus.

I remember the ONE time I tried Norton as an AV...and it though that AVG was a virus for some reason. Weird since AVG is an anti virus program in itself. All I'm saying is that some programs are TOO good at what they do,and might get rid of things that you need or want.

As for spyware...I think the one called pest control was the one that TechTV voted as the best one they etsted. I dunno if it's free or not though. They did a test where they purposly infected machines with the same spyware/adware and then ran the programs to see how many each one found and got rid of. For each test they did a complete reformat to make sue that everything was equal....and pest control (or pest patrol) did the best out of the bunch.

I think spybot came in about 3rd of the bunch.....still not too bad for free.

My arsenal of programs are:

CCleaner DOWNLOAD HERE
AdAware Pro DOWNLOAD HERE
SpyBot: Search & Destroy DOWNLOAD HERE
Hi-Jack This DOWNLOAD HERE
Bit Defender DOWNLOAD HERE

If there is something not found by the software above...check the processes...see what's running and search for the in Google. If it's a virus (or anything) you'll find it and most likely with direction on how to rid yourself of it. So, I say, all of the above and manual searching

HiJack this is extremely powerful if you know how to use it. Javacool Spyware Blaster is an excellent free app which will protect you from Active X downloads of Spyware, ad sites, tracking cookies, etc. Get it here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Having used Pest Patrol, I personally didn't care for it. It would always turn up my Media player Classic and Limewire Pro as adware, yet nothing else did. I read a little on it, pest patrol is known for picking up false positives. I use a combo of Ad-Aware Plus, Webroot SpySweeper, Trend-Micro PC Cillin, and Javacool Spyware Blaster. Spy Bot S&D is a remarkable freeware program. It has a real time monitor called Spy Bot S&D Resident, which is as good as most pay apps for real time protection. You simply have to enable it from the advanced mode throught the start menu. It locks down your hosts file, registry, blocks tracking cookies, prevents Spyware from installing in real time, etc. I'm going to write a tut on how to use SpyBot S&D's resident and Javacool Spyware Blaster soon.

I recently added Avast anti virus to my list of freebies (seems like my friends are always looking for "free')
http://www.avast.com/

I also like;
adaware
spybot search and destroy
and usually use a startup/registry monitor to give waring of registry changes
AS Viewer from diamond software is one of my troubleshooting tools
And Highjack This has also proven helpful on occasion.
Enjoy!
