Well,I got curious about the newer Suse distros....and there's one thing I really like about it. Right out of the box in Suse 10.0 the windows NTFS partitions are mounted. I know that for some of your this doesn't sound like a big deal....but if you ever had to deal with a bad mount you'll understand.
Basicly to find them you just goto [places\computer\Filesystem\Windows]...this is under the Gnome environment...I don't use KDE but I imagine it'd be the same idea. Once you find the Windows folder, inside will be folders that represent your Windows partitions. Windows Folder ![]() Windows Partitions ![]() .....just a nice touch for newer linux users to have. If you want to view your partitions in Suse, you can either look for the app that hold the info. OR you can open the Konsole and type this sudo Kwrite /etc/fstab This will pop up a window with all the info you need about what hard drive is mounted where. There is a way to edit this file through the ROOT user account...but most people won't need to do so. SCREENIE ![]()

How about SUCE 10.1 on SATA? Any luck, not here I've finally got my pata running dual booting XP, and SUCE and I' m sure most Linux peeps here know what problems I'm running into with wireless. By the way My neighbor knows I'm using his nework, I help him all the time and set it up, I'm no wardriver and woundn't even consider the concept. Nof offence I'm sure people know how and do it all the time, I don't get down like that. I just like computers and make an honest blue collar living.

I haven't tried running any linux off of a sata drive....the only sata drives I have right now are SATA II and i'm still not sure. Although it'd be worth a try...since it'll install in like a quarter of an hour...lol.

I've tried once and had no luck, but will try again and play closer attention to problems, mind you it will be a dual install with XP so it might be a month or so. What other Linux OS's would you reccommend, and will I have the same problems I'm having with playing, DVD's, mp3" and what not with SUSE 10.1. Someone told me for SUCE I need a full version of XINE? Am I right in assumming if I can find somewhere to download it, it will have the plugins I'm missing, and is it something have to build from scratch, if so I might not be up to it. Later on............

I tried 10.1 for a short while, and from what I seen the mp3 codec isn't included with xmms out of the box. However, realplayer will play mp3's without adding anything...so you still have somehting to use till you get xmms running to speed.
As far as the dvd issue goes...I have no idea. There are alot of packets included when you download the DVD version of suse 10.1,and xine might be included...but I didn't look for it when I used it so I can't say for sure.

Excuse me, if this is a stupid reply, but I don't remember seeing real player. Of cource I need to reboot to look again. Be back soon.
Okay, I forgot when I installed and set up my 20 Gig last night I made two partitions splitting the disk inhalf , 9.8 GIG a partition installed XP on the first half and then continued and installed SUSE 10.1 on the 2"nd half and I guess there wasn't enough room for add on media Disks 4 and 5. So this fresh install is missing a lot of add on programs. When I just know opened up Kaffeine for the 1'ST time an got this No Win32 codecs found in /usr/lib/win32 libdvdcss not found The great part is I can now for the first time access all my windows XP system files and what not on the other partition. Could this be as simple as copy and paste? I'm wondering if I can use some of the codecs out of XBMC,

You can just get standard codec pacs from the net, and then get them installed easily with YaST... google it

I found this w32codec-all-20060611-0.pm.0.i586.rpm from http://packman.links2linux.org/index...ction=046&vn=1 , and it installed fine, but I still can't play mp3's, and MPEG-4's. Only wav's and only using Kaffiene. And that was from a cd. On the cd its shows alot more files, folders and file extentions, is this unuasull to me because I so used to windows, and Linux doesn't hide certain things from me?
Also I abtained libdvdcss-1.2.9.tar, but not sure of what directory to dump it. Any links to other reccommended codec pacs would be greatly appreciated, If you look at the link I listed above you can understand my frustration, ThanX for getting back. I'm also having trouble subscribing to different threads and am not being notified when they are updated, like this one for instace. The advanced reply options say instant notification? Quote:

xmms is basicly the same as winamp in alot of ways. Anyways...if you have the disk, you can look for Yast and dig through there. You shuld be able to get to a section where you can choose what packets you want to install.
One of these packets will be realplayer, and then check it off so that it will install it. You will have to put the disk in and then it will install it off of the disk. Once you finish that, make sure you get your updates so that it can download any updates for the new player. To be honest I can't remember too much about how it updates....I'm so used to (and partial to) yum in the red hats. Once you have eveything done, you should be able to go into your menu (START) and it should be in the media/audio section I think.
