There are two ways (maybe more) that you can update your machine running Fedora. The easiest is the GUI version...you can activate this by clicking the red icon in the top taskbar.

It will be familiar to windows users as it's a simple GUI and hard to get lost.

The second way is through your terminal using YUM.

The use of yum is nicer I think,because it's less of a hassle on your machine. Here's how to update using yum.

STEP ONE-open a terminal. You can open the terminal in FC4 (fedora core 4) by giong to the top taskbar on the left and clicking Applications. In the dropdown you will then select System Tools. Then you will see the selection for the Terminal. Click this and a white window will pop up,kinda like the command prompt for windows.

STEP TWO-enter the commands. The commands you are now going to enter are as follows.

-su <---this will give you access to root (equal to admin in windows)
-your password <---you enter your root password
-yum update <---this will start the process of scanning the packages you have to be updated
-y <---this will give the OS permission to update the found packages

STEP THREE-install the packages. After the OS downloads the packages,it will ask you if it's ok to install them...just type y and it will do the rest.

STEP FOUR-reboot
