How to Setup an FTP Connection
This quick little guide will show you how to setup an FTP connection in Ubuntu, with the service that comes pre-installed with the distro. Yes, third party applications can be used, but this is the process with Ubuntu out of the box. > Select Places > Connect to Server > ![]() Next to Service Type, select the type of connection you are trying to establish. The image below shows the options. In this guide, I will select FTP (with login). ![]() NOTE: Make sure you fill in the appropriate information above to create your connection (i.e. Service Type, User Name, & Name for the connection are minimal). > Once you've entered the information in the window above, Select Connect and you will see the following window prompting you for your password and other options related to the password. ![]() > Input the proper password, select your setting, and press connect. Within seconds a window should open to the root of the server you are connecting to. |

Yeh, it is...Linux is just simple. Check this, say you already have a WIndows network (which XP is still on my main PC). With Ubuntu, to access files on that server it goes like this:
> Go Places > Network (A window will open automatically showing computers or server already added to the network) This is completely automatic, a fresh Linux install would do this just as well as a system you've had for ages. We all know what it takes to get a WIndows OS added to a network. NOt hard, but it's more than two clicks...that's for sure. ![]() As you can see, I have a direct connection to XS and the system automatically detects that there is a Windows network. So, clicking the WIndows Network icon... ![]() Currently, there are 3 desktops and a server on my network. You don't see the computer that you are currently on, but in this case (left to right) two desktops and my media server are displayed. Simple - Two Clicks without any setup required. |
