WinRAR - creating archive, setting default settings etc

Ok, this tutorial will cover setting the default archive settings of winRAR so that you don't have to enter these each time you create/unpack an archive.

1. Open up the winrar program.

2. Go to options --> settings

3. You can set the default location of your extracted and archived files and a default profile. Select the compression tab.
To enter the desired archive/extracted files, just enter the location manually in the boxes or hit the browse button and select the desired location in the browser.

4. Setting up a default profile.

4.1. Now as we're still in the compression tab, select the create default button.

4.2. Set the compression method to store which I find is fastest.

4.3. Enter a value in the split to volumes, bytes box. I set mine to 99MB, so that's 99m you enter into the box. This means that instead of creating for instance one big 4GB file, it'll split it into volumes of the amount you've selected.
NOTE - This value can be anything you want it to be, so set it according to what you're going to be using it for.

Also, I like to set mine to put recovery record etc... you can find out more about these options and more in the HELP menu options.

4.4. Now select the advanced tab. I like my archives to have a recovery record that could help with repairing the archives in case of corruption, so I set that to 10%.

When you've done that, hot OK and the default profile is setup.

Now to create an archive. For this tutorial I am going to use an ISO file and split it according to my default settings done in the previuos part of this tutorial.

1. There are several ways to get started, but the easiest I've found is to make sure beforehand that you have all the files/folders etc that you want to include in the archive in a folder of it's own. Then you just have to select the files etc that you want.

2. After selecting the files/folders that you want, click on the selected files with the right mouse button and select the option add to archive

3. This will now bring up a winrar window with all the settings you previously entered into your defualt profile. Click OK to begin the archiving process. It doesn't take very long when set on store even for a very big file.

4. Then the process is complete. The RAR files are now in my chosen location that I set earlier as my default.

And if you were to open/extract from the RAR files you would see this.

I hope that has explained RAR archives to you a little and made it easier to extract/build RAR archives in the future

LOL - thanks... the ideas just came to me after visiting AD a few itmes in the last week and seeing people still asking the same old questions about how to extract the files etc etc.. so I thought I'd make a tut with pictures so it's easier to understand this stuff for them hopefully.
