RAR recovery volumes - creating/using

Ok, this is basically a tutorial on how to create and use RAR recovery volumes for the purpose of replacing ANY missing RAR files from an archive. eg, you've had RAR files deleted from your hosting site or maybe there are corrupt RAR files that you need to replace..
With recovery volumes you no longer have to keep all your RAR files in case of one of them being deleted.. each recovery volume will replace ANY missing RAR file.

For instance, you create an archive consisting of 8 RAR files.. instead of keeping all 8 RAR files you can just keep the recovery volumes on hand to upload should one of the files get deleted/corrupted..

1. Select the file(s) you want to add to the archive.

2. Click the right mouse button on the selected file(s) and select Add to archive from the drop down menu.

3. Set the archive options as you want them.. remember to tick the box put recovery record

4. Select the Advanced tab - and enter recovery record options(if wanted) and set how many Recovery volumes you want
[Note] remember that Each recovery volume will only replace ONE missing/corrupted RAR file

5. Set a Password (if required)

6. When all options are decided.. click OK

7. It will now make the archive and recovery volumes.

8. Done

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using the recovery volumes.

1. I deleted 3 of my RAR files at random.

2. Double click ANY recovery volume, and when asked "do you wish to reconstruct missing volumes?" click Yes

3. Done, they are now rebuilt and useable

I hope this was of some use to you

No worries.. I haven't had to use them yet - but will come in handy if any of my "backups" get deleted for any reasons.. I generally have 1 recovery volume for TV series of 3/4 RARs, 2/3 recovery volumes for movies of 7/8 RARs and probably use around 8 recovery volumes for a game
By the way, this won't work if say you have 4 RARs deleted and only have 3 recovery volumes.. so plan ahead.. and personally I only upload the recovery volumes IF I get the originals deleted.. so I just store the recovery volumes on my HDD/disc if/until needed

Really? LS did one - I know I did one before about making winrar archives and setting the defaults.. I just didn't include recovery volumes in the mix.. sure it wasn't that one Stang? LOL

Anyway, no worries man.. glad it's of use.. been doing it a while now myself - just forgot to tell others the tricks of the trade

I think this is a good idea, my only prob would be for something like games, I dunno if it's worthwhile. In an instance where one of your rars is missing, I guess it is. But if your whole upload gets deleted, it's not gonna do any good.

Yeah, this is just for those times when someone reports 1,2,3 etc of your files... personally I won't re-up a whole anything.. it takes up too much time, and HDD space.. but there's no harm in keeping a few 100MB files around for a while just in case a few get deleted. What I do is set aside/partition so much HDD space.. say 50GB.. then just fill that up.. when it gets full either put some stuff on disc if you think it's worth keeping.. or delete the older recovery volumes.

Yeah this is a pretty good idea. My main problem is limited HD space. I delete everything as soon as it's upped, I can't keep my 4GB files on my HD, simply no space. Question Paddy, in your old tut, you recommended 10% for the recovery record, now you only use 3%? Does it make any difference, what are the benefits to using a higher/lower percentage for a recovery record?
