Simple guide for adding subtitles to AVI file

Ok, first off this guide is just a simple guide to tell you how to put subtitles that came with an AVI file into the movie itself so that it can be played on a stand-alone MPEG player. A good place to get subtitles is HERE

You may have to alter some settings in this guide depending on what codecs etc you have on your computer.

You need a few things for this project:-

VirtuaDub – which can be found in the downloads section of Xtreme-Source HERE or if you can't get it from there.. get it HERE
Unzip and install the program package (by install I mean move the program folder to a location of your choice). You may want to create a shortcut for this program on your desktop too.

Conversor – which can be found HERE
You may want to create a shortcut for this program on your desktop too.

Virtuadub subtitler plugin – which can be found HERE

VirtualDub filters can be loaded manually by clicking on the Load button that appears in the Add Filters dialog box. They can also be automatically loaded at startup if you copy the .vdf file into a plugins subdirectory under the VirtualDub program directory.

I recommend that after unzipping the subtitler 2.4 file, that you locate the subtitler.vdf file and click copy, then paste that file into the folder where Virtuadub/plugins can be found.

If you don't know how to create shortcuts, check HERE

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before we begin, make sure you have the subtitle file in the same folder as the AVI you want to add the subtitles to. See below.

1. Now we need to convert the .srt file into an .ssa file. Open the program Conversor.

2. Next we need to select the input file. Click BROWSE.

3. Browse to where you have the AVI and subtitle file.. and select the subtitle file .srt

It automatically selects the output file as the same name as the input, but with the .ssa extension that we need.
I leave the settings as is, but you can play around with the settings to see what's best for you if you like.... then click CONVERT

If that's the only subtitle file to be converted, you can now close that program.

4. Open up the program VituaDub. Under the VIDEO menu, make sure that Full processing mode is selected. Then select OPEN VIDEO FILE

5. A browse window will pop-up, browse to where you keep the AVI file, select the file and click OPEN.

6. Select FILTERS from the VIDEO MENU.

7. Select ADD button.

8. Scroll down and select SUBTITLER from the list. Then click OK.

9. Next select the subtitle file that you created earlier.

And click OPEN

Then click OK

10. Next we need to select the compression method. Select VIDEO menu again, then select COMPRESSION from the list.

11. Select the required compression, I have chosen XVID and left the settings as standard.. click OK.

12. Save as AVI, select where you want the output file to be created and the name. Go to FILE menu, SAVE AS AVI.

Select the location of the file you want to create and the name. Once you click SAVE the operation will begin.

This is VirtuaDub in progress.

Now just sit back and wait for it to finish...

Then spent about 2 hours today doing this guide, LOL.

I usually watch it on my xbox...I just put the subtitles file in the same folder as the video file and XBMC uses them perfectly.

But yeah, this is an awesome and somewhat easy way to solve this problem of putting them to the files properly.

thanks for a great guide but I have one problem. When I get to the bit where I have to open the video file in VirtualDub, I get this error message:
[img=http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1854/untitled7fb.th.jpg]
And, maybe because of that error (or not) I am not allowed to choose "subtitler" from the video filters list and by saying I'm not allowed to choose it, I mean the option is not there. Can you please help me out?

P.S. When you say install VirtualDub, how exactly are you supposed to do it, because there's no installation file. Thanks.

Sorry, I should have put in the guide that you need to be in full processing mode... Go into the video menu and select full processing mode... before you try to load the video file.. see how that goes.. it should be in full processing mode as default though, so maybe it's because of the audio bitrate that's the problem.. I don't know a way around that, sorry.

As for the installing of virtuadub, I meant just move it to the location of your choice.. then you run the program from that location or create a desktop shortcut to the .exe file. For the subtitler option, just follow the instructions in the guide... I just downloaded the new version of virtuadub and installed the subtitler plugin again just to be sure it all still works and it does, no problem with it... I think you may have skipped some of the tutorial at the start, where it says to copy the subtitler .vdf file into the plugins folder in virtuadub.

I can't vouch for how this works with a variable bit rate (VBR) video file as I've never used it for that. I'll try to help out where I can and even try a few things myself to see if they work, but I can only do so much towards it... follow the guide carefully, especially the part about installing the plugin... and let me know how you get on and I'll try to help you further if you need it

[edit] Tutorial has now been edited to tell how to "install" virtuadub.
