How to Download Songs Off Imeem

This guide will show how to download music off imeem completely with freeware. The advantage of imeem is that uploaded music is converted into a flash file with good quality audio, usually identical to the source file.

What You Will Need:

1. Imeem account. It's free, sign up here:
Code:
http://imeem.com/
2. Install NetworkActiv HTTP Protocol Analyzer and Network Monitor: http://www.networkactiv.com/NetworkActivPIAFCTMv1.5.exe

3. FLV Extract:
http://moitah.net/download/latest/FLV_Extract.zip

Before Starting

In Windows Explorer, disable the hide extensions for known file types option.

1. From Explorer, Go to tools-->folders options.

2. Under the view tab, uncheck hide extensions for known file types. Click apply then ok.

Guide

1. Sign into your imeem account. Create one if necessary.

2. Locate the song you wish to download through the search option.

3. Open NetworkActiv 1.5. The first time you open the program, this menu will appear. Select File mode. Check remember my choice if you do not wish to see this screen when opening NetworkActiv.

4. You will then be prompted to choose the interface for the network on which to listen. Select the IP address for the computer you are using and click ok.

To check the local IP address of the computer you are on, go start-->run and type "cmd" minus the quotes. This will open a command prompt. Then type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. The IP address posted there is the local IP address for your PC. That is the IP address you want to select in NetworkActiv.

Most times there will probably only be one IP posted. In that case simply select the IP listed in NetworkActiv and click ok.

5. Select a location for the downloaded songs from imeem. Right click in the directory you wish to store the files and create a new folder. Name it something like imeem songs. For simplicity's sake, make it something like C:/imeem Songs

You can either copy and paste the file location from Windows Explorer into the directory to store constructed files field in NetworkActiv or type the folder location manually.

6. Click the start button in the bottom left of NetworkActiv before clicking on the song you want to download from imeem. If you click the start button after clicking the link for the song, reload the page and click start after it fully loads.

7. Click the link for the song you wish to download on imeem.

8. The song will then begin to download.

9. Once files processing is at 0, click stop.

10. Close NetworkActiv.

11. Now browse to the folder you created for the imeem downloads.

12. Click view-->and select details.

13. Then sort the files by file size. Click on the file size column so that arrow is facing downward. This will sort the file size in descending order, starting with the largest file. The audio file should always be the biggest file, it will have a gif extension.

14. Right click the largest gif file and select rename or select it and hit F2. Rename the file as you wish, just make sure it has a flv extension.

15. Now Open Flash Extract. Uncheck all the boxes except audio.

16. Drag and drop (left click the file, while holding left click move the file into Flash Extract) the flv file into Flash Extract. You will be given a popup box with a green check next to the flv file if the audio extraction was successful.

17. Now you should see the newly created mp3 file in the same directory as the flv file.

That's it, enjoy your mp3 file!

Final Notes:

1. This tutorial was done with Windows XP, the required software may not be Vista compatible.

2. Make sure to hit start in NetworkActiv before clicking the link to open the page with the song you wish to download. If you do accidentally hit start after clicking the song link, be sure to reload the page. Otherwise the song will not download properly.

3. Virus scanning the downloaded files from imeem before working with them is not a bad idea, you never know.

4. PeerGuardian 2 is optional if you wish to retain some privacy when downloading songs from imeem. PG2 is an IP blocker that blocks people/organizations who are known to monitor downloads. Get it here: SourceForge.net: Downloading ...

You could do all that. Or, you can just download this nifty little program called MediaCatcher. As soon as the file starts playing it starts downloading it. It works for videos and audio. I've gotten songs off Myspace, Imeem, peoples websites. I've gotten videos from Youtube, Google, Ebaums World, Starter Up Steve, and others. You just play the video or song and it grabs it And you don't have to set all that stuff up, you just hit play.

Well the main purpose of this is to convert the flv files to mp3 because of the wide support for the format. Flv is not nearly as portable a format as mp3. Virtually all media players (hardware and software) handle mp3, only a few handle flash. Download Helper for FireFox will download virtually any media from a site without requiring a separate program to be installed.

Me too, in fact I'm the president of the local RIAA Booster club. There are few causes more worthy than making millionaires richer.

@Darlyle I tried Replay Media Catcher with imeem, and it didn't work for songs. Perhaps I was not using it correctly, though I don't imagine there's much to it other than enabling all the plugins and hitting start recording before loading the page with the song. It did however work for downing videos from Yahoo Music, so that makes it a keeper. I'm sure it works well with most sites, those are the only ones I tried it with, mainly because they are two of the harder sites to get stuff from.

MediaCatcher saves flv files as an mp3 if it's audio only =p
It also snags mp3 files from places like myspace, and even does avi and mpg (and flv) and I believe it does quiktime movies also. =p

Imeem is audio only for the music files. If you check the Applian homepage, Media catcher was last updated almost a year ago. Since then, it's likely imeem has caught on and used some sort of scripting or server security measure to stop Media Catcher from working. There aren't a whole lot of ways to down off imeem, I went through several methods before arriving at this one. It's also possible I am not using Media Catcher properly. I don't feel that's the case since I have no problem using it on other sites. But I can't rule it out for sure.
