Photoshop: The Basics - Vol. 3
Creating Borders For Your Images

This simple guide will teach you how to create simple borders for your images.

Step 1 -
Within Photoshop, open the image that you would like to provide a border. I am going to use th image below:

STEP 2 - Select your Rectangular Marqee Tool then Create a new layer

NOTE: To create a new layer SHIFT + CTRL + N

STEP 3 -
Left click in the top left hand corner of your image and drag a rectangle all the way to the bottom right hand corner.

Step 4 - Right click within the dotted rectangle and select Stroke

STEP 5:
In the stroke menu, your basic concerns are width, color, and location. Select your preference of each. Width will give you a thicker border, color will color that border, and location (for borders, only use center and inside) will place the border according to which of the 3 you choose.

Apply these settings if you for exact results, change them if you prefer:

STEP 6a -
Your end border result should look something like the image below:

Of course the complete final depends on what image you started out with. As you can see there is a pretty thick border (3 pixel). For that thin look, of course one is the best size to apply. Congratualtions, you've just applied a simple border to an image.

Step 2b - If you want something like a bevel, go all the way back to Step 1. Get your image, right click on the image in your layer pallette on the right side of Photoshop's on screen display, and select blending options. From there just select Bevel and Emboss and you should see like border like the one below.

That's It!!
