How to Batch Download Pictures with FlashGet

This tutorial will show how to batch download pictures with FlashGet. FlashGet is a download manager with a lot of power, if used properly.

Get it here:

FlashGet

FlashGet works great in combination with the FlashGot tab for FireFox.

Get it here:

FlashGot Tab

With the batch download feature in FlashGet, 100's of picture files can be downloaded in less than a minute. That said, it does have some limitations.

Limitations:

1. The FlashGot tab in firefox has a feature called "FlashGot All" which brings up a menu that contains all links on a page, this option is excellent for most things. Some sites just won't work with the FlashGot All option, i.e. thumbnails will be brought up in the links menu instead of the image files themselves.

2. The image files need to be sequential in order. I.E. If the image files are Image1.jpg, Image2.jpg, Image3.jpg and so on, the batch download option will work great.

3. The batch download option doesn't work for image files on a secure server. I.E. Any site that requires a login/password.

Guide

1. Open FlashGet.

2. Click on an image file in the gallery you want to download. Right click the image file and click properties. Note: Some galleries will allow you to click an image a second time to load a full size/bigger image. If you want to download the full size images, make sure you you click on the photo/link to open it. Then right click the full size image, click properties, and get the url.

3. Highlight the full url of the image file in the location box. Right click the highlighted url and click copy.

4. Click Jobs-->Add Batch Download in the top of FlashGet.

or Click the Flashget Icon in the taskbar.

Then click add batch download from the context menu.

5. This box will appear. Click in the url field and click paste. This will paste the copied url from the earlier image.

6. Highlight the number of the image in the url field. I.E. if the file is Image01.jpg, highlight the 01

7. Delete the number in the image url. Replace it with (*) That's parentheses, asterisk, end parentheses.

8. Now in the from box, put in the range of the numbered images that you want to download. IE if you there's 50 total images in the gallery, type From 1, starting with the first numbered image, to 50, the last numbered image. Conversely, if the pictures are ordered by letter, type in the range of letter. I.E. if there's 5 images, put from a to e in the second "from" box. Then comes the wildcard bytes. This sounds complex, but it's not. The default number of wildcard bytes is 2. This simply means that the images are ordered Image01, 02, 03, etc. The 2 represents the number of characters for the number portion of the selected images. If the pics were labeled 1, 2, 3, etc, the wildcard bytes should be set to 1. If they're numbered 001, 002, 003, then the wildcard bytes will be set to 3. Very simple once you get the hang of it.

9. Once the information is entered correctly, click ok.

10. This menu will appear. Pick a directory for the downloaded pics, set any other desired options and click ok.

11. Wait while the pics download, shouldn't take long. The status of the pics can be viewed in the upper portion of FlashGet. If the url of the pictures is correct they should download fine.

That's it!

Final Notes

1, If the images keep coming up 404 error, double check and make sure all the url information is correct, the wildbytes are correct, the images are sequential and not on a secure server.

I'll just add that if it's a thumnail gallery with links to pics direct.. just use the flashgot all function and then either just click the checkboxes or choose from the default checked options in the left hand corner.

Yeah this is mainly for when the flash got all option doesn't work or there's multiple pages of images.

Yeah it's a nice tut.. sorry if it came out wrong before..

I just generally don't use the batch download/wildcard feature very much.. but mainly because I mostly visit places that have thumbnailed link pics and so can just use flashgot all and select Jpg etc as the default extension to mark for download
