Better looking Animated GIF

I know some of you are curious on how to make a better looking animated sig. Basically its based on the colors that it contains. More colors, means better looking animation, but also means larger in file size.

Here is a brief tutorial on getting a good size animation GIF with a good picture quality.

Use my other tutorial on creating a clip and importing it to ImageReady, when you got the video imported into imageready, at the top right you should see this window.

Click on the Optimize Tab

Im not really to sure what the default value is, but it would look something like that. You can use their premade profile, to get a fast small (compressed) gif. Quality is still good, but in most case it can be bad.

(The image is big, because it allow you to tell the difference Small images have lower color count, so this doesn't really apply)

Now lets do a custom profile.

Make changes so it looks like that. Change Reduction to Perceptual, Change Colors to 256 and Change Method to Pattern (blur color). Thats it, save the GIF and it should be better now.

(Dithered 128 / Custom Profile)

See the difference? No? Look closer at the fire... Its more blended and clearer. But as you can also see, the Custom profile is 400kbs larger than the Dithered 128. Also everything else in the custom profile GIF is clearer, because the colors are blended. Like the fog and background.

But of course smaller images will be better.

Awesome Kam, Thanks for this. It's exactly what I've been looking for. I don't care about the size right now. Just want to make something a little smoother. Good to know for Avatars too!

No problem, You can play around with the settings a bit, but by far that is the best I came across. When both GIF are loaded at the same time, and sync with another, you can clearly see the difference.

Nice guide. Unfortunately with my style sigs, this just doesn't make much difference. But for bigger ones, it obviously makes a big difference.
