How to change your IP address in under a minute

Hi, first tut as staff, many more to come, this was just one I thought is handy and you as computer user's should know.

IP Address

Web Definition

IP address – Every machine that is on a network (a local network, or the network of the Internet) has a unique IP number [four sets of numbers divided by period with up to three numbers in each set. (I.e. 64.139.27.165)] - If a machine does not have an IP address it cannot be on a network. Most machines also have one or more Domain Names that are easier for people to remember. I.e. www.greencomputer.com. Within an isolated network, such as an office, you can assign IP addresses at random as long as each one is unique. However, connecting a private network to the Internet requires using registered IP addresses (called Internet addresses) to avoid duplicates.

Taken from:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right, let's get going, shall we?

*Click Start at the bottom of your screen.

*Click Run

*In the open dialog box type command and hit ok

*In the black MSDOS prompt screen type ipconfig /release and hit enter.

WARNING, The above step will disconnect you from the Internet so if you are in the process of typing a long post for Xtreme-Source, save it..or just do this after you've posted it, either is fine

*Now type exit in the command menu to leave the prompt.

*Now, navigate to My Network Places on your desktop, OR just go like so, click Start > Control Panel > Network And Internet Connections > Network Connections > you should be able to see Local Area Network or something similar, right click and choose properties.

*Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list under the General tab.

*Click on Use the following IP address under the General tab.

*Create an IP address, at this point it doesn't matter about what you type, just add 1's and 2's until you fill it up.

*Press enter and it should automatically fill in the Subnet Mask section with default numbers.

*Press Ok and Ok again.

You should now be back to the Local Area Connection screen.

*Right-click back on Local Area Connection and go to properties again.

*Go back to the TCP/IP settings

*This time, select Obtain an IP address automatically

*Hit Ok again

You now have a new IP address

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enjoy, to master this technique and do it regulary.

Nice Rav. I went ahead fixed some of the UBB codes, hope you don't mind. It's capital B, not lowercase B for bold. Very nice first tut.

To get a new External IP, there should be a button on your router. On my router is shoulds 2 button, Release and Renew. If you have a direct connection from the DSL/Cable modem, ipconfig /release and ipconfig/ renew will work to get a new external IP.

the easiest way, if you have a network, is to log onto your router and (if your on a dynamic ip address, from your isp) disconect from the internet, then reconect, and you get another ip address assigned to you, i have used this oftern, proxy comes in handy if you want to do things like that though

With most companies in the US, you have to be disconnected for about 3-8 hours to get a new IP, lol. Thats such a hassle, I sit at my comp, and press release, renew, release, renew, so on.. LOL til I get a new IP.
