Faster Internet Speeds with OpenDNS
It's time to optimize your internet connection By tEChniiQue, xtreme-source Opposite to what some may think, short of upgrading services with an ISP (Internet Service Provider) there are things that can be done to enhance your internet speeds. This tutorial/guide will cover... I. Single Computer Instructions for OpenDNS II. Home Network Instructions (several links provided per router type) III. Toubleshooting Why should you bother reading and/or utilizing this guide? OpenDNS offers faster Internet access (e-mail and FTP, too), and it's free. Domain Name Servers (DNS) translate site names, such as xtreme-source.com, into IP addresses that PCs employ to locate one another on the Net. Most people use their ISP's DNS services by default, and some providers are slow. Switching to OpenDNS has advantages. First, it's faster because it stores requests in a large cache; if you ask for the same IP address that other users have requested, OpenDNS doesn't need to look elsewhere--it has it. Make a typo--say, "netfliks.com"--and you're delivered to the correct site. Not only that, a warning appears if you reach a phishing site. In short, it could be for your own good and your PC will thank you. Now, let's get started. I. Single Computer Instructions for OpenDNS (Windows XP) > Start Menu ![]() > Control Panel ![]() > Network Connections ![]() > Right Click the network icon above and Select Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties ![]() > Select the radial button "Use the following DNS Server address" ![]() You will need to input the preferred and alternate DNS Server for OpenDNS which are as follows... Preferred: 208.67.222.222 / Alternate: 208.67.220.220 Click ok and you're done! Click this link now: OpenDNS You should see the welcome page of OpenDNS. ![]() II. Home Network Instructions (Wi-Fi or Wired) If you have a home network established or plan on setting up one soon; utilizing the OpenDNS settings on your device will help your entire network to benefit. Links are provided below with their corresponding router manufacturer image. Find your router and follow the link to the OpenDNS web site. For those of you that might not see your router, go HERE: OpenDNS > Get Started > General instructions for home network routers ![]() III. Troubleshooting I've yet to see any errors come of this change but in some cases, you may need to restart your web browser, router, or modem; maybe all. But this guides change to your system should be a fairly simple process. **FAQ** OpenDNS **FAQ** Good Luck!! |

Not a problem guys. I've only been using this for about two weeks. Just some curiosity got me looking into it. I've yet to have a problem. I have noticed that sites seem to respond better initially once the cache has been cleared and even better once files have been cached. Good luck with it, I've yet to see a downfall on using this...

The main reason I think that people would want to use tis method is to step away from a poor ISP, where they have few options in hteir area. I know quite a few areas, especially down south of the U.S., cities have assigned certain areas to ISP companies, cable companies, etc... I'd just think that this would give them that out if the dns servers provided by the host are not up to the user's standards when it comes to performance.

Using that DNS is like using a Proxy, but it doesn't mask your IP. There are some good and bad for it. Good thing about it, it probably has a better DNS cache than your ISP, thats why things are faster, it can block bad pages. It can also filter email. The bad about it, is for things like P2P, they can block those. Or monitor them and report it to the authorities. Basically its a GIANT PG2, it can filter peers, files, anything it want.
