Post Make Your Applications Load Faster...Much Faster

Make Your Applications Load Faster...Much Faster
Another effort to enhance your PC's performance; a MUST DO!!

If you're anything like me, SPEED, is essential when it comes to my computers and their performance. Here is another MUST TRY that can make a significant change in loading times for ANY application.

For this example, I'm going to use one of my favorite programs. If you use it, you know that it takes a little while to load; especially if you have extra fonts, brushes, etc...loaded that it needs to read. Well, were gonna make it faster along with nay other program you wanna speed up.

STEP 1:
Right click on the Adobe Photoshop shortcut and select properties from the menu.

STEP 2: In the Target: Field add the /prefetch:1 switch to the very end of the path.

So originally, the Target Field shows:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Photoshop.exe"

You are going to make it show:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Photoshop.exe" /prefetch:1
There is a space between the
" and the /

STEP 3: Select Apply and O.K.; or just O.K. is fine and your change will be applied.

NOTE: This switch does not work with all programs. If you complete Step 3 and get a 'target box invalid' message, just remove the /prefetch:1, Select O.K., and all will go back to normal.
This has been tested w/ Windows XP and works.
ENJOY!!

Yes. I was trying to find a way to get Photoshop to load faster and this was it. I do things in Acrobat as well and this edit is much better than that 'Speed Up Adobe' program for Acrobat that I've seen.

Yeh, the "/prefetch" parameter was added into the C++ library a while ago, think last year, when called upon, it will load directly into the memory and not be extracted on to the computer HDD, which can be defined in System properties. Really good tweak, I never used it before, but seen alot on it.

Hello tEChniiQue

I followed your tut on the, about loading programs up much quicker by adding the prefetch1 into the target line, and wow i was amazed, i had adobe photoshop loading on both my Main PC, and my laptop at least 20 seconds faster, and that is a lot of speed indeed a great tut cheers m8

Also some application may need to use the second parameter for file attributes. So if you add /prefetch:1 on some application it might return back an error, like Unable to locate file, or something involving a missing file.

Im sure you can set it in the registry for those files thats already associated with the application.

Photoshop 7 (PSD):
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Photoshop.ActionsFile]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Photoshop.ActionsFile\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop 7.0\\Photoshop.exe,31"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Photoshop.ActionsFile\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Photoshop.ActionsFile\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Photoshop.ActionsFile\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop 7.0\\Photoshop.exe /prefetch:1"
So each time you open a PSD file it will already use the /prefetch parameter and load without creating a prefetch (otherwise load faster). There are 3 other ways to apply this to photshop, but I chose the easiest, since everybody have a different CSID in the registry.
