How to Update Xbox Media Center with Qwix

The purpose of this tutorial is to show how to use Qwix to upload XBox Media Center as an iso. Why install XBMC this way instead of FTPing it as normal? A couple reasons:

1. Because it's a huge time saver.

2. I have a wireless connection, so FTPing will only net me 4-6MB's/sec at best. A wired connection will generally go twice as fast. If you have a wireless connection, this is a godsend.

3. XBMC consists of hundreds of small files. A FTP client can get really bogged down when dealing with a bunch of small files. Uploading XBMC as an iso with Qwix totally removes this annoyance. In my case, FTPing Xbox Media Center normally takes 5-10 minutes. Using this method, it uploads in a minute.

What you'll need:

1. A modified Xbox, soft modded or hard modded.

2. An active FTP connection from your PC to your Xbox.

reinstall windows xp

3. Qwix:

4. Xbox Media Center. No direct links here, you'll have to find it on your own. It's very easy to find, check xbins or torrent sites for current releases.

Guide:

1. Open Qwix.

2. Select Create Iso.

3. Tick the local folder box and click the browse button. The browse button is the ... to the right of the Local folder box, highlighted in blue in the following pic.

4. Browse to the XBMC folder. Note: Most releases will have a couple folders when unpacked, usually the core components will be in a folder labeled XBMC. Highlight it and click ok.

5. Tick the automatically cross-link identical files box and click create iso.

6. Pick a destination it the "save in" box. Pick a name for your iso in the "file name" box. Make sure iso is selected in the "save as type" box, and click save.

7. Hang tight for a minute while the iso is created. This shouldn't take more than 30 seconds to a minute.

8. The iso file is created! Click ok.

At this point, turn on your Xbox and boot into the Avalaunch dash. Avalaunch takes advantage of the boost feature, which speeds up FTP transfers significantly. You don't have to use Avalaunch, but Qwix is most compatible with it, and you'll get the full benefit of the boost feature.

9. Click the "Load Iso" button on the left side of Qwix.

10. Click Load Iso at the top of the program.

11. Browse to your iso file and double click it or single click it and click open.

12. Once you see your iso added to Qwix, click the browse button to the right of Main Folder at the bottom. This button is the ... highlighted in blue.

13. Browse to the partition which contains your apps folder. In my case, this is E-->Apps. Click ok.

14. Click FTP Upload All at the top of the program.

15. XBMC will be uploaded. This will only take 30 seconds to a minute.

16. That's it! This process makes updating XBMC a snap, and saves you precious time.

Final Notes:

1. It's always a good idea to FTP your current build of XBMC to your PC before updating. That way in case something goes wrong, you'll have a backup of your current build.

2. Sometimes Qwix has trouble compiling an iso while your Anti-Virus is active. If you keep getting "could not connect to port" errors, try disabling your AV before compiling the iso.

3. This tutorial is meant to be used to update XBMC as an app, not as the main dash. If you use XBMC as your main dash, update it accordingly.

Yeah, I've found a ton of uses for Qwix. Anything with hundreds or thousands of small files it's a godsend for.

Ihate having to do this through ftp, because of all the little files. Alot of people keep asking why it takes so long to transfer. If you have one large file it will go faster than a bunch of small ones...because the ftp kind of acts like a switch.

It will open - send - close - check

So if you have one large file, say a 700MB divx...it only has to do this one time. If you have something like XBMC with about 10 thousands of files....think of that switch opening and closing thousands of times. Even if it adds up to half a second for each "switch" ....multiply that by about 10 thousand....thats alot of time.

Anyways, the quix idea is cool....and if your dash suports the boost...it's even better

Yep, I hate it too. This idea just came to me one day, and it works great (at least from my own experience). I've used this to transfer hundreds of small files in seconds, it works great for that. Very useful for stuff like XBMC, Surreal 64xxx. Like you said, for large files, an FTP client is fine. When you get the hundreds or thousands of small files, yuck.
