Recommended reading for linux/ubuntu

Wow is all I can say.. In thought that switching to a linux distro would be relatively easy, but it seems not, LOL - all is forgiven windows!

Anyway, i'm not one to give up on something after just a few hours of messing with it.. so if anyone has any prefered tutorials/manuals etc for linux in general then that'd be great.. i'll obviously research this myself too, thanks to google

It looks like e pretty steep learning curve from first impressions.. basically you have to use command line interface for most if not all admin tasks. I have yet to figure out how the hell I can even see the files on my windows HDD.. I know I have to use "sodu" command and basically assign it a location, but then the text I was reading goes off at a tangent and starts going on about user permissions etc.. which yes I do wnat to know.. but at the moment all I wanted to do was hook it up so I could play a video file from my windows HDD or my SATA HDD.

Anyway, ANY simple explanations would be great to start with.. i'm not dumb, just don't want to wade through 3 pages of technical stuff just to assign my HDD.. I can look up what the actual commands etc do later, LOL.

OK, well looks like I will have a lot of reading to do over the next few weeks/months.. first thing I'm gonna do though is make a bootable partition manager in case I want to try a different distro like xandros 2.0 and install GAG to the MBR to make stuff like changing O/S easier in future...

Everything I learn on linux I will make a "simple as possible" guide for, so that others won't have to go through a long learning process too, LOL

Thanks for any help guys

That's one of the things that turn away people is the Windows partition mounts. It can be done in ubuntu to a read only state.

here's aquote from a forum from another guy that was asking about mounting the drives.

Quote:
If you already know which partition it is, just do this:

sudo mkdir /media/<partition name>

and add this line (edit it first) to you /etc/fstab

/dev/<partition> /media/<partition name> ntfs user,umask=0222 0 0

with

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

For example... My Windows ntfs partition is in /dev/hda1, so i do:

sudo mkdir /media/Windows

then i....

sudo gedit/etc/fstab

to add this line

/dev/hda1 /media/windows ntfs user,umask=0222 0 0

Now just do

sudo mount -a

to refresh the mounting thing...

You could always try making a small FAT partiton somewhere that both OS's can goto to transfer files back and forth. If your windows drive are something that you'll be going to alot,I would suggest using a distro like Suse since they mount the drives right out of the box. I also think Mandrake does that too.

Thanks man, I think I understood that.. it's been a long day, LOL.

I will definitely persevere with ubuntu, but if it gets too much I may swap to a different distro.. I have a xandros CD, and that looks pretty good http://www.madpenguin.org/Article811.html

I want to learn as much as I can about linux and it's distros in general... just may take a while to get used to, LOL. It seems pretty good, i'm not knocking it at all.. it's just like when I first starting learning about computers(mainly dos and windows), you have a lot to read up on and get the hang of using. Thanks again, will let you know how I get on

[edit] by the way, I didn't have any problems with it setting up networking etc so I could use the internet, it was all automatically done at login/install
