Question Dumping XP for Linux...

...or atleast thinking about it.

Since last night I have been reformatting all of my systems. Currently 3 desktops and 2 laptops...plus one desktop who's sole purpose is to server as a "server" as some of you know who had accounts to it a while back. Well, as for the desktops...I am seriously considering dumping XP (even the soon to be back up again server).

What do you guys think...we all know which is better and faster but can/could/should someone like me (very new) to Linux just dump XP that way? Don't get me wrong, I've used it before, I'm not a 100% noob but in all honesty XP is getting (actually, Microsoft) is getting on my nerves.

I know an easy choice would be to put Linux on on ssytem and use XP on the others...done that. What do you guys think? Does anyone here use Linux and Linux only???

LOL, i can see the hate mail now, but im happy with XP. All my apps load fast, customized to my needs, and overall, im just used to the interface. At this point, linux would be learning to walk again, so "if it aint broke dont fix it."

An overstatement by far if you're talking about me, LOL...but I get what you mean.

And that is exactly why I'm thinking of ridding all my systems of XP. I tried the plan of keeping one as Linux and the rest Windows but I tend to keep going back to Windows. I keep thinking if I "FORCE" myself to work with Linux then I'd be pretty ok after time...I'd have to be.

Do you think that Linux is better than Windows or are we all just fooled because it's the majority vote?

If you play PC games, then I'd say use windows. If the PC is going to be a workstation, then you might as well try linux since most of the programs that come with it are made for this type of machine.

It's also good to learn both OS's since alot,if not most companies use a Linux server somewhere...and that end of the network is good to know.

Yeah I'm very new to linux... i'm still working on getting the first steps done.. but mianly because i'm trying to get a good workaround from the beginning by installing and running GAG boot manager to stop conflicts/problems between linux and xp loading.

I ahve xp configured how I want it now.. so no more probs there hopefully... but i am definitely gonna stick with linux too... just got a lot of stuff to learn.. I believe most linux distros come with a livecd/dvd version so you can try out the distros beforehand to see which one(s) you like and want to install. At the moment I have ubuntu/xandros/fedora/damn small linux - and i'm gonna be trying out fedora when I can work out how to install it into the first boot sector instead of the MBR, LOL.
Anyway, as I'm learning I will try to pass on what I've learned in the OS section, so that anyone else that wants to try linux can benefit from my mistakes/knowledge I've picked up... if others that are learning linux or know linux can do the same we can have that section covered too, as it's pretty bare at the minute.
I think you would be best to go with a dual OS if you're not expert at linux, then at least if you run into a problem with how to do something in linux and it's important, you can just switch to windows again and get it done.. then figure out how to do it in linux for future use.. hope that makes sense.. and sorry for the long winded reply, LOL.. good luck with it tech

I'm going to install Linux soon, on a cheap low spec laptop I got off amazon to use as a testbed.

For now, I stick with XP

It does what I need it to, if Linux goes well, then I may reconsider.

Hello everybody, Degs here (I'm new).
I am a completely new to Linux but I know it'll be worth me knowing it for future jobs, I'm a student in University at the moment).
Sorry to be the noob but can I just ask a few questions:

1) How much does Linux cost?
2) Can I run XP and Linux on the one system?
3) Is it easy to install?
4) How much space does Linux take?
5) Is it easy to completely remove?

Thanks in advance for the help folks.

Answers

1> Can cost nothing (legally)
2> Yes with a duel boot system
3> Not that hard at all,and most distros will have instructions on their site
4> Could be as little as a gig and as much as 3gigs (roughly)
5> Very easy
