There is no best distro of linux...there are just alot of distros to choose from. What I would recomend is to download a live CD and try out a few of them before you install.

On that note, there are a few that are an easy transition from windows....since the Nix comunity have been trying to get windows users onto their OS's by making it a little more "similar".

-Suse
-ubuntu
-fedora

Those are my 3 suggestions for a first time user. Fedora being my fave of the bunch because of the support and ease to update and install rpm's. You can download bootable DVD's of fedora at their site, and with the GUI install that most distros have now...installing has gotten way easier than it was 5 years ago.

Hey, punqewe

What wireless adapter are you using on your Fedora machine; yes I'm messing with Fedora now, and out of the box it has support for alot of cards, but neither of mine, go figure. I've mentioned this madwifi tar ball I've downloaded, but you have to bulid the driver on nix.

I havent dealt with wireless since i dont use it.....but out of the box they usually just support the most common ones I guess. I'm actually just about to put in fedora core 5 64bit....so I mght be able to take a look....but I'm still in the dark about wireless. All I know is how to "get" free stuff with it,if you know what I mean.

Yeah, there was a bunch of goodies on this DVD I've got, and support for about 50 wireless cards, but no codecs of cource, it did ask me for a red hat add on CD with codecs, and plug ins durning the install. I got it with "Linux ALL-IN-ONE DESK REFERENCE for DUMMIES" a lot of great information, too. The encolsed DVD comes with Fedora core 3 Distro, Knoppix live, and the ablility to burn iso's from the 7.66 GB DVD for Debian, SUSE, Xandros. I checked it out at the library.

I tried to install fedora core 5 on my SATA II drive but it doesnt like SATA II I guess. My main drive is only a 40 gig so I might wait till I get a larger main drive before I install it.

There should be a bookmark in the firefox that will take you to a rpm site though....I know it's in the core 4,I havent used core 3 though. I was still in red hat 8 at that point. Either way...after some searching you mght find it...even if you have to use windows to find it and then put it to disk (the rpm) and then transfer it that way....small price to pay for free legal OS's I think.
