Knoppix

Anyone that hasn't tried it yet.. do!!

It is the best linux distro I have ever seen.. I got the DVD version (LIVE!) and it detected all my HDDs, router and all other hardware... ready to go on the internet, had loads of great progs/apps included and was just so easy to use in general.. the only thing I couldn't find as it was justa quick 30 min test was how to make it install, lol... but I did find a link that lets you store files on a removable drive etc if you want to run it from DVD each time.. doesn't take that long to boot up, so it's a possibility..

I will explore this further though, and let you know what else I find out - sure beats winblows for regular PC use and comes with a firewall etc too I believe..

watch this space!!

I used to use my knoppix live CD all the time with my buddies laptop. Very handy when cracking wireless passwords. Airsnort rules.....but you'll get to that some other time. Also things like ethereal and another app I'm not gunna mention...handy for monitoring convos through networks. Like at internet cafes,on their hotspots.....LOL. You'd be surprised what people talk about on msn...and the info they give away.

....but yeah, knoppix is a handy tool filled distro.

I think the best start is to get a live disk and try it out. If you like it then maybe get the install versions. Or go and try another live disk of another distro. Knoppix is a good one as far as tools and diversity.

Yeah, the live disc rocks.... best distro I've found so far

Just have to figure out how to install it now.. should usually have an installer on the LIVE disc.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what is the difference (Live and the other kind?) I assume LIVE is run of the disk, but thats just a shot in the dark.

Yep, basically it mean it runs from the disc instead of installing.. some linux distros on disc can do both run live and install.. unfortunatly Knoppix only runs live still a good distro though, I mean if you're gonna leave your PC on for a while anyway, it's not that big of a deal for a few mins boot time.. then you just have to configure it so that you have somewhere to save your files you might want to keep.. so either partition a HDD to store your files or use a flashdrive etc.. just remember that as it;'s a liveCD it won't remember any settings etc you may change.. unless you can configure that to look in your partition or something? i'll explore the options a bit more and get back to you
