Well, I don't think there is a Linux equivalent of Windows 2000 per se. I wouldn't even say that there is a Linux equivalent of Windows to begin with. Linux by definition requires a lot less resources to run than Windows, almost everything is free and open-source. It is also a lot less targeted by malware, and there is a lot less extraneous crap running by default. So most versions will run on virtually any machine, regardless how old or low tech it is. As far as which distro to try, here is something that might help. zegenie Studios Linux Distribution Chooser
It's an online quiz which will recommend specific distros suited to your needs.

There used to be a distro called Lindows that was trying to lure windows users by making it a similar to windows as they could. They were also targeted by the windows doods because of the name....I think they changed their name to Linspire at one point though.
I really don't know what the distro is like as I haven't used it....also I dunno if it's been kept up and supported either.

Usually the cd takes about 6 weeks to arive, but you can order more than one too. Maybe order one and download it too, that way by the time you get your disks in the mail you have it installed and you can use the original pressed disks they send you for later use.

if i were to give you a Linux Distro, i would say either OpenSUSE or DSL, or Damn Small Linux.
but i recently ordered disks for OpenSolaris, and ill let you all know how that goes, but there are a couple of Linux Distros that make Live cds, so you don't have to install them to use it but they are slower, you can test run OpenSUSE, DSL and OpenSolaris with out installing it, and the live cd runs in just the RAM and doesn't touch the hard drive, unless you want to install it Last edited by bryctucker; 05-07-2008 at 05:15 PM. |
