It depends how you want to go about it. With XP you can either totally remove it and install one of the Linux distributions (distros), or set up a dual boot where you have the option to select XP or Linux at boot up. To install Linux, you have to partition a portion of your HDD to a Linux-compatible partition with a program like Partition Magic.
One of the big advantages of Linux are Live CD's, which completely contain the Linux distribution of your choice on a disc. You can boot the entire OS off disc without actually installing anything or making permanent changes to your PC. So if you find a distribution you like, then you can give it a try before installing. Then if you like it, you can do a normal Linux install. Here is a Linux distrubution chooser which will help you figure out which distro is right for you: zegenie Studios Linux Distribution Chooser Here's a guide for setting up your partitions for installing Linux with Partition Magic: Making a linux partition with partition magic That should get you started, I recommend trying any distro you are interested in with a Live CD before installing it normally. That way you aren't stuck with an OS you can't stand.

if i create a doc in linux and i have to give to a printing company

I don't see why not, I mean a doc file is a doc file, there are programs for Windows and Linux that can handle them fine. I'm not positive about that, but I believe a document file created in Windows or Linux can be transferred between either OS, provided their is software installed that can handle document files.

Sometime it works like that, but it all depends on how the application handle or creates the document. Open Office is the mostly used application on Linux, and it works just like MS Words.
