Okay well I am not a vista user but some general questions could shine some light on this.
1. When you say blank does the computer shutdown or does the screen just blacken/dim?
2. Have you recently installed any programs or stressed the computer to its limits?
3. Has there ever been an overheating issue in the past?

My questions could help others help you too. I'm sure more experienced users have better questions as well.

Okay well we cannot rule out overheating yet but it is less likely that is the problem. Viruses come in all shapes and sizes and (stupid me) I learned first hand they can really start up with windows before you can get to remove it.

Now...When the screen blackens can you still hear any fans or even the hard drive still working/spinning?

The repair computer option is probably Vista's recovery console. Here's a FAQ for using it: Windows Vista Help: Startup Repair: frequently asked questions

If it is a virus capable of disrupting Vista's boot sequence, then it is no small issue. You may only have a couple options, using the recovery console is not a bad idea.

Send a message via MSN to Darlyle

Doesn't Hiren's allow you to scan before Windows starts, and remove virus? I can't remember if it partitions or scans >_>
