Im not sure if this is the correct forum but I couldnt find anything else.
I have a sh*tty old windows 98. 96MB ram like 300mhz cpu. My free computer technician gave me this sh*t computer for free. He said he had it working on his broadband at home.. yet I cant get it to work here at home. I tried sticking my Broadband setup disc from BigPond in it and it said "Your computer is not supported with Broadband" or something. I havn't asked him yet cause i havnt tried getting in contact. The 'free technician' is actually my dads mate that happens to be a complete wiz with computers. ANYWAY. Is there anyway possible to get my 98SE working on 256kb/s broadband without upgrading anything? Thanx in advance. |

It should be easy. What you need to do is make sure the computer have a LAN connection "RJ45 plug", just hook up the ethernet from the router/hub to it and make sure the router is DHCP, and you should be up on the internet. But I dont recall if 98 have a good TCP/IP protocol, so you may have to update it.

I have to have two routers? or is two computer off the one is fine? Sorry to sh*t you guys off and annoy you. But thanks for somewhat Putting up with me ![]() |

Ok, this should be the setup.
You have a DSL/Calbe modem, which is linked to a router with a RJ45 "Ethernet Cable". And from the router, there is another RJ45 to the computer. If the router supports muliports, hook another RJ45 to this 98 PC, and check if it gets an IP automatically. If not, you may have to check if there is any TCP/IP updates. Cause since Windows 98, the internet have changed alot ![]()

The highschool I attended last year, had all their pc's running 98, and they were all on highspeed... Suprisingly... I'm on a newer computer with XP, and it's slower than the schools were O_o
Isn't there a bandwidth limiter on xp? If so how to I change that lol...

The limiter on XP Pro keeps 20% of your downstream bandwidth reserved for MS Updates. We have a guide for how to get it back here:
http://www.xtreme-source.com/tutoria...bandwidth.html I've never noticed a huge jump in performance, but there definitely is no reason not to free up the 20% of user bandwidth.
