Dell Laptop XP Help

Hey ,
My sister brought her Laptop back from UNI and it seems she has gotten a Virus off her College network. When ever she starts her computer , she gets to the login screen , Logs on then immediately after the computer is done logging in , it starts to log off. She seems convinced that its something to do with the Registry. She also being very cheap and doesn't want to pay for repairs.

Does anyone know any solutions , it would be greatly appreciated if anyone could supply some help.

BTW , She's running Windows Xp Professional ,
Intel Core Duo Processor
The Laptops a Inspiron 640m

Yeah, tell her to use her repair disk and reinstall windows. With that little information it is hard to diagnose a real problem. If she can log onto windows, please post a hijack this log so we can further look into the underlying problem.

Sorry to sound like an arse, but with so little information it is truly hard to help.

Can you boot into a safe mode at all? Try holding F8 at startup and see if you can boot into safe mode. From there, you can try running some malware scans, or try a system restore, if you have it enabled. When the message pops up asking if you would like to do a system restore, hit yes. Try restoring to an earlier time. That might fix the problem if it is a software conflict or something. If not, you can hit no at system restore and try scanning for malware in safe mode, or reinstall XP. Formatting will delete all files on your hard drive.

I cant get any more detailed information. When you start the computer under Safe mode or Normal you get to the welcome screen showing all the account names. When you click an account and logon it comes up "Loading your personal settings". Then when it has finished it automatically starts to logoff your account. Then your back at the Welcome screen again.

Ive tried Safe Mode. I was just wondering if there are any other ways of getting on so you can view your files before I reinstall windows.

The only thing that does that, is if the copy of windows is not activated. When it is not activated, it will log you out everytime you login. And the only way to fix it is to reinstall XP and make sure it is activated

So it logs off before you get to a desktop? Or does it do that shutdown timer where it gives you like 45 seconds till shutdown?

If it gives you the timer, quickly hit the window key and the R key to bring up the run command. Then type in shutdown -a

If it gets to a desktop this will stop the shutdown process, kinda of like the fix for when that silly msblast virus went around. Then you should be able to scan it and all that stuff.

If it doesn't get you to a desktop then if you can get into the bios and see if it will boot to a USB device, you could always get or borrow an external hard drive and format windowsXP on there and then set it up to boot from there. Then you could scan it from that hard drive maybe...or at least view your files and grab what you need...etc etc etc.

You last hope would be to run off a live disk and then grab whatever you can as far as info and such and then do a reformat.

....other than that,I'm at a loss.

You said it was a dell right? there is a diagnostics mode on it if you hit F12 on boot to get the selective boot, there will be two diffrent sections and go to the bottom one and chose boot to utility partition. see if that helps try some diagnostics

also dell has the best customer support try chating with a rep ( go to Dell Support - Technical Support, Drivers & Downloads, Troubleshooting, Product Manuals and Order Status to chat ) see if he can get you a reinstall disk. and if you get one (or already have one boot from the disk and when the cd gets done loading, it will ask you what you want to do, chose repair windows or whatever i says it should be the bottom one, PLEASE CHOSE THE RIGHT ONE, ONLY FORMAT AND REINSTALL WINDOWS AT LAST RESORT. YOU WILL HAVE TO FIND YOU DRIVERS, SOO IF YOU REINSTALL GO TO Dell Support - Technical Support, Drivers & Downloads, Troubleshooting, Product Manuals and Order Status THEY HAVE THE DRIVERS FOR EVERYTHING THEY SELL OR HAVE EVER SOLD.
