Exclamation PC Help! No sound!

Hey guys!

I've been having some computer issues..... I logged on my computer Thursday, and my System Mechanic kept giving me errors about ntdll.dll when it attempted to scan the registry. So, I tried to unregister the dll, but it couldn't find the service point, or something similar to that. I tried to restore, and it let me, but I still had the error, so I said, ehh, I'll reinstall it later, only thing is, now I have no sound! I scanned with several things, including Spybot and HTJ, but I don't see any sort of virus! Im running Windows XP SP2, 1 GB ram, 2.19 GHz AMD Athlon 3000+ processer. I have no sound card, I use the multimedia controller built into my motherboard. Any help is appreciated, it sucks having no sound. Also, just to avoid further questioning, I have uninstalled and reinstalled sound drivers, but nothing worked.
Heres my HJT log.

I dont know which sound controller you have, but best option I can give you is to download all the main sound drivers.

Realtek
Via

Another thing you can do, is look up the motherboard model #. Of if its a premade PC, (ie. Dell, Compaq, HP) search their site for the audio driver.

I think I can solve this in 10 seconds or less. Did you install the ATI HD Audio drivers along with your video card? To check, go to start-->control panel-->sounds, speech, and audio drivers-->sounds and audio devices-->audio and set your onboard motherboard sound to the default sound playback device. This will most likely be realtek depending on your motherboard manufacturer. Click apply and hit ok. Then update the drivers for your motherboard (best to use the mobo manufacturer's website) if that doesn't solve the problem.

Alright... I tried everything, and no, it doesn't work. I have some info though!

My computer is NOT premade, it is a custom computer I made... it has an ABit motherboard on it... I tried to get sound drivers but the download didn't work
My audio controller: VIA VT1616i @ VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller

Sound helps ALOT, so if you can help me at all, I'd appreciate it. If needed, I'll post an Everest computer report... if your not familiar with the program, it tells you hardware information about your computer.

I'm not exactly sure what to think... I don't know if its a virus or not, because I find it funny I can't do a system restore. So... Please help!

In the control panel, under sound and audio devices. Is it enabled, or is everything greyed out?

Then it is a driver issue, or a required system file is missing or damage.

Only way to fix it is to do a repair install. What it will do is reinstall windows, but leave all your files and application intact.

Read more here on how to do a repair install.

Um... I don't actually have a Windows disk anymore... so this isn't an option :S

It makes me wonder why my sound just suddenly stopped working after I restored it to a week earlier.... hmmmmm..

What if I bought a sound card? Would that work?

Thats a 50/50 thing if you get a sound card. Cause the main sound kernel could be damage, or cannot be loaded correctly cause a file it needs maybe missing.

Can you ask a friend with the same windows for the CD if they have it. There are ways to get it, we all know that. But im not going to go in-depth to that

System Restore, doesn't always work, cause it will only repair minor damages.

Thanks for this solution, I'll go to my Aunt's house tomorrow and pick up her copy of XP, and I'll post the results.
