How is it a piece of crap?? You can still play all the games you "backed up" cant you?? Seems to me that MS is losing the battle! Get some friends, some extra controllers.....then then you wont need Live.

How do microsoft know that you are playing back up?

I'm sure in the Spring Update they included some code that allowed them to detect drives running modded firmware or some other flag that's present only in a modded console, and used that to banned modded consoles from XBL. The next logical progression is to stop backups from running at all, be wary of the Fall Update. That said, if they could've stopped backups from booting now, they would have, banning people from live will have minimal impact on software piracy, so it's virtually guaranteed MS is actively looking for a way to cut off the hack.

Agree with LS. This should be no surprise at all. People all knew it was a matter of time. Especially Xbox 1 owners. So have fun while it lasts then say screw you MS and continue playing all your wonderful games offline.

I can't raise my hand up yet. And no, I haven't yet unplugged either. I'm like Steimy. I only have a couple of months of Gold live subscription left and I honestly wasn't considering renewing. We all knew that something wicked would this way come someday and it has. Now we can either sit back and wait for the hackers next move or just do what we like to do and game. As long as my backups work, I'll be happy. XBL be darned.

Where I am totally empathetic is to those that have posted about getting a refurb from microsoft and getting banned, or buying a used console from a gaming store or something and getting banned with no mods in place or ever having as much as cracked the case open. If those people are telling the truth and I was one of them, I would be highly upset. I read a post from a guy over on xbox.com that said he called MS support multiple times and offered to send the console in for inspection and posted pictures on the net for them to look at that the seal had not been broken, he says the MS support wanted nothing to do with it and told him that nothing could be done that the detection system was perfect AND told him he would need to purchase a new console. That to me says law suite all over it it its true.

Yeah, I got in fine and could see friends online...just couldn't log in on my 360. Plus, when I go to more info on the "Live failure", it doesn't say anything at all (like the message posted earlier).

I read something similar, a guy on Major Nelson's blog got banned because he got a replacement drive for his 360 after his original died. He was not running any modded firmware, so it seems possible that it's at least partially based on the original drive key synced up with the 360, which would ream replacement drives and refurbs.
