![]() Problem down to ‘improper use’, says Microsoft By Tim Ingham, MCVUK Microsoft has responded to mounting accusations that Xbox 360 is damaging consumers’ discs – maintaining that there is “no systematic issue” with the console. Calls for a review into problems with damaged discs came to a head this week, when EC for Consumers Meglena Kuneva confirmed that she had written to Microsoft requesting information on its plans to resolve the issues. In a statement, Microsoft told MCV that it has responded to Kuneva – and that faulty discs are likely to have been caused by ‘improper use’ of the console. It said: “There has been correspondence between Commissioner Kuneva’s cabinet and Microsoft’s Belgian offices. “We are working in an open dialogue to help explain our position and all the efforts we are taking across the EU to address any concerns that our consumers may have. “If used properly, Xbox 360 consoles do not damage discs... there is no single root cause or systemic issue with any of the Xbox 360 consoles.”

wow, so Microsoft's stand is
deny...deny...deny how surprising that one is. I know many many forums where people have posted about this problem. And although it could be user error it is harsh just to say "sorry charlie, not our problem" But i can tell you that not one of my doscs has been scratched

MS is such a money hogger. The disc shouldn't be scratching regaurdless of position; Thats the whole point of creating a good product. If I flip the Wii or PS3 upside down, vertical, horizontal, im 100% sure they wont scratch the disc, nor be effect in anyway. MS, already have the heating issue with the 360, which people now would have to put a new internal fan, thus if the xbox 360 breaks, they cant return, exchange it. Because it was opened.
Most retailers, will stop accepting Xbox 360 as returns, because the numbers are insane. Fry's already enforced it, they wont accept banned xbox 360 or xbox 360 hdd, let alone if it has been open. They will check to see if the Seal is still intact, with no bubbles, or cut seems.

I agree with Kam. Microsoft could have done more to prevent a lot of the flack that they are getting. The most prominent areas being the 3 red light error and the disk scratching. The disk scratching could have been eliminated all together by putting a 5 cents worth of foam tape in the top of the DVD drives. That way if there was any movement of the disk at all whether by the end user or otherwise the disk would hit the foam and not touch the laser mechanism. On the 3 red lights error, we now see Microsoft making a lame attempt at correcting this issue with the Elite. Putting the epoxy around the cpu and gpu. I suppose this was the cheapest way to go about a fix, but I'm not to confident that it's enough to hold the chip down if some of the BGA connections did separate. Any way that Microsoft is approached on it, they will take a "It's not our fault" or "Faulty consoles are under a certain percentage rate." They will never own up to any responsibility because it would cost them a crap load of money. And whats sad is that it's all a business tactic. I sometimes wish I hadn't bought my 360. Not because I don't like it, but because of how Microsoft is handling themselves in this situation.

I think they'll pay more attention with the next version of xbox. When the people who are authorized to see the actual numbers of screwed up consoles that was returned for repair and what not goes over that, they may consider looking at the quality side of things. Who knows, maybe they planned it this way to get people to buy for 360's when their consoles died not long after their warranty ran out. Of course, I'm just speculating too.
