Backburner 360...thoughts on the PS3...

Well, as I've told some of you, my 360 had a "meltdown". The infamous heat issue carried over to my 360 that was literally one of the first issued in the world. Purchased in Guam shortly after the release date - first place "on earth" to sale them.

So, I knew the potential was high for my 360 to follow suite like all the other reports and give what I like to call, "The Red Light Special"

Less than 72 hours ago, my 360 died and new life was given to me over purchasing a PS3. Now, to this very moment I have played the PS3 for less than 1 hour but I must say, I am "impressed".

I used to be a Sony man. I was a modder for the PS1 back in the day "1997-1999" time frame. Learned a lot of it while in Kwang Ju Korea, but anyway. After Nintendo and Sega Genesis, I went PS1 to PS2. Then, when modding came about for the XBOX, I quickly made a purchase.

Starting the next generation with the 360, I was "positive" that Microsoft had done something right *cough. Even with all the heat issues reported, I still had faith. Now, I'm not so sure.

In no way was this written to say that one ocnsole is bette rthan the other. I am not biased towards either. Both have been a part of me and gaming for quite some time.

I'm a sports game fanatic. To me, the most exciting sports game of the year was NBA 2K7. The only thing, as I have mentioned several times, was the graphics didn't compliment the gameplay. Now that was with play on the 360.
Coming over to the PS3, things are quite different.

My 360 set was as follows:
32" Olevia - Flat Screen - 360 DVI cable

My PS3 set up is currently:
32" Olevia - Flat Screen - PS3 HDTV cable

Now if I'm not mistaken, the rank in video qualit goes a bit like this from lowest to highest quality:
4 - Composite
3 - Component
2 - VGA/DVI
1 - HDMI

Assuming that is correct, the common variable in the setup is the TV and the game. I can honestly say that the PS3 has shown better video quality in that game w/o question. I played 2K7 on the 360 on a regular basis...I would notice graphical differences/enhancements with no problem. That was the only thing I complained about when it came to that game. Some choppy sceeens and graphics here and there.

Now, that is on HDTV component cables (my PS3). I do know that there isn't an extreme difference in the two but there is some. I can only imagine what the HDMI cables do to enhance the graphics.

I guess it's a plus to have the Blu-Ray but it's not something I plan on using a lot anytime soon. Being able to play online for free, well, anything free is a plus.

The games that I play sports, racing, action (i.e. Splinter Cell, GTA) will always be available on both consoles so no heartache there.

I think the 360 has strong points in the online department. The PS3 is just powerful and great behind graphics. I'm curious as to what change, if any, the Elite 360 and HDMI have in comparisoon to the PS3.

All in all, so far, it's a great system. It just boils down to what you are looking for in a console to decide which is better. For me, the games I love are offered on both consoles and I'm not an online gamer. It could easily be an either or for someone with my preferences...

With the free online play, I can see you playing Madden or NBA 2K7 online 24/7. If its free, take advantage of it. Maybe sometime me and you can go at it on Madden 07 I would lose though. Glad you love your PS3!

Same here as far as online gaming, I don't ever want to play against other people in online games. Never having played the PS3 for more than ten minutes, I said you wouldn't be disappointed. It's a quality machine with a ton of outta the box features the 360 can't match. It won't burn out in a year, blu-ray is nice to have, and once it actually has some good games available, it will certainly pick up in sales. To me, the next gen battle is 360 vs PS3. The Wii is sparsely more powerful than the Xbox 1. People can say power doesn't matter all they want, but when the games look no better than PS2/Xbox 1 games, I aint buyin it.

Glad you like your PS3, hopefully there is mod available soon.

When I learn all the ins and outs, pluses, and see the bad points that may exist..I will be able to say for sure (in my eyes) if it was well worth the purchase. But, right now...I see no bad coming from this system.

So many groups, so many ways. A group I know are working on a "Non Disc" solution. What does that mean... Well you basically need to have a linux bootloader (kboot). And you must install their custom linux, which can boot the PS3 games (ISO) from the HDD. But getting the games to the HDD, well you have to have YDL, Fedora, ect installed to transfer it or backup the game onto the HDD. And in their custom linux, you browse for the ISO and load it. I havn't heard from them for awhile, considering their project is either a failure, or discontinued. As for Paradox, they been saying stuff, and not much progress yet.

Yeah, I saw that already. Funny how that is based on a lower firmware, and it takes ages to load the game/swicth game.

Great review tECh. The first one I've read where a 360 owner has purchased a Sony machine after the demise of their console. It says a lot about what people want and how much they are willing to pay for it. Quality. I've already decided that I will not buy a 360 until the heat issue is solved. theridges posted an interesting article on that showing that they are closer. But as of now, if I had the money, I would get the PS3. I guess time will tell.
